My coffee demonstrator has a cracked end. Not the blue one. But .... Waaaah.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

And my latest ebook, for spooky wintery reading:

This made me realise I hadn't actually tried the clip at all - it's been exclusively in a holder on my desk. So I just did and rather wish I hadn't! The whole thing, clip and finial, gently hinged up on the remaining little piece of extant plastic; no noise of breakage or anything, it simply came apart with no effort at all. Like picking a ripe blackberry. Just about the most disconcerting thing I've experienced with a fountain pen.

I wonder if it's a problem with certain colours, or a cross the board.

Is it worse than a sharpie clip.

Just went back through the thread in the Other Place and tallied up which colours have had cracks reported and came up with the following:

    Coffee Demo - 4
    Black Demo - 2
    Clear Demo - 2
    Red Demo - 1
    Solid Blue - 1
    Solid Green - 1

Plus a report of someone who had five out of a pack of six with cracks, colours unspecified.

Trouble is we don't know if the Coffee Demo has had more instances because it suffers the most, or simply that there are more people buying it because it's an attractive colour. Likewise, are the cracks simply more noticeable in the demos over the solid colours? If my cap crack had been in a solid colour, I suspect I'd not have seen any evidence until quite late on when it finally migrated to the surface, at which point it fell apart in my hands. It'll be interesting to see if these results change over time, assuming people keep reporting in. But at the moment, solid colours appear to be a better bet.

To be fair to mine I wouldn't have subjected pens more expensive to the same abuse (even my metro pop), however it does seem the model is a bit fragile. They are currently 99p with free shipping, so cheaper than a sharpie.

Doesn't look like it really invites feedback from end-users. I have emailed them before (in English) with no response, but they do have a telephone number also if you speak Chinese.

    http://jinhaopen.com/en/messages.asp is the feedback form.

so question as i havent bought any. Do the cracks affect your ability to write with the pens? (sans ED of course)

Personally it's just the clip and finial that snapped off. The inner cap remains intact and it still writes well.

I was shopping for washi tape on eBay this afternoon and the seller I was using had these beautiful clear fountain pens for 3$ each. I thought "why not?", so I threw a clear and a blue one in my basket. I found out after that they were Jinhao 922, and I was so happy to read good reviews. As for the cracks, I hope they find their way to me unharmed. I don't think I'll be causing any cracks because I never use the clips on my pens and I don't post them to write (tiny hands can be an advantage). I look forward to give you my impression of these little cubic zirconias ;-)

Not so far, and I never eyedropper pens. I just refilled the coffee demonstrator with a MB ink. Would that be an absurdity?

I had six arrive yesterday, one of each transparent colour. I converted one to an eye dropper before reading about the cracks, but all mine are fine. One of the other five would not write, but post unscrewing the nib unit, removing the nib, and soaking separately, they all work well. The five spare will be handed out as crack cocaine pens to new FP users.

I just noticed a crack in the coffee one, and no, it doesn't affect how it writes. It still writes very well. I still like it.

    Audrey,

The cracks aren't on the clips. They are on the bottom of the pen. They seem to appear all by their lonesomes.
