Default Parker 61 Cap jewel swop

    Hello,

I have a early P61 Cap with a damaged jewel but I also a damaged early P61cap with a perfect jewel.

Given that there are evidently a small number of P61 experts here perhaps one can help me.

Please remember I am not that clever.

A short detailed procedure with some photography would be great.

    Many thanks for your time.

You can remove the cap jewel in the same way as you do a 51 jewel. Likely it will be cemented in place with rosin or shellac based adhesive and will require heat or soaking in naphtha.

Use a sticky rubber pad to spin the jewel while you hold the cap. A NOS 61 jewel is about 10 with shipping, unlike 51 cap jewels, they are very available.

Try seller fatnibs on eBay. Did have a large quantity with the brass clip bushing.

by the time you read these words you may have succeeded in removing the jewel - but if not then after warming you might try a fresh lump of Blue Tack pressed very hard against the jewel - and obviously turned anti-clockwise. There are other materials recommended for this removal - Main Street Pens sell a rubber block which Ron Zorn has been using for some time with success and which the call a 'Jewel Tool', and as a last resort some folk have adhered super glue on a short dowel to remove the upper part of the stud and then drilled out the threaded stem ............. not to be recommended unless you know what you're doing.
I find that something like 60% of jewels shift with dry heat and either Blue Tack or a Jewel Tool.
    Best of luck.

A Great Many Thanks for your comments.

    They are greatly appreciated.

Over the last month I have tried the methods mentioned ( Bought expensive Dycem non slip pads - the best there is - no result )

Earlier in the week I bought a damaged P61 Cap without a jewel - I wanted to have a good look at the construction of this cap in detail.

After an hour or so I have worked out a way to unscrew the jewel on another perfect cap.

    It takes about 3 seconds.

The down side is you still have the plastic jewel attached to the brass screw.

Frankly it think is impossible to release it even with some very specialised tools

My next project is flattening out dings in Parker 61 Custom caps - worked today on a cap with very surprising results.
