Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Wish I could help you but no idea what a roller ball brand might be. Hundreds of fountain pens though take International Standard cartridges.

    Hundreds.

BUT, what price, what size, what materials ...there are simply so many possibilities out there.

Anything from most of the low end Chinese pens to something like this:

    Let's start with some basics.

How do you usually use a pen? Short writing sessions, long writing sessions?

You say "price does not matter" but is there a range? $20-50.00 $50-100.00 $100-250.00 $250-500.00 $500-1500.00

    Give us a hint.

For example you can get a Platinum #3778 Century with the fine or extra-fine nib and the adapter for International Standard cartridges for under $100.00 or a Montblanc 147 for about $800.00 or a Graf von Faber Castell pen of the year for about $2500.00 or ...

    Hi, MarkLovesErica,

Check out JetPens. You can sort pen by type of filling system or no filling system (you want pens that take non-proprietary standard cartridges).

You might look under "Beginner Fountain Pens." Something like the Kaweco Sport might suit you.

You might enjoy reading their post on Beginner Fountain Pens. It helped me make some of my early decisions.

Generally the Chinese pens all use the International Standard cartridge/converter.

Other makers that use that standard:
    Faber Castell
    Platinum (with the $1.00 adapter)
    Kaweco

He must have done something really bad that you recommend a newbie a Chinese crap pen.....

These Chinese junk pens might work in some cases but the quality is bad, the materials are bad, most of them need a lot of tinkering and even then might not work properly.

The best thing to turn somebody away from FP's that they never want to use one again is to recommend them such pens.
    (Or a Noodler's pen maybe).

I would recommend you something from Pelikan, Kaweco, Waterman or Faber Castell in the entry range.
If you don't mind different cartridges also Lamy and Parker are great options.
They work great, have decent quality and materials.

But with cartridges you are always very limited which ink you can use.
Think about using a converter, then you have the choice to use any bottled ink you like.

Another option would be to take a (entry class) piston filler.
Here you can take a look at the Pelikan 2xx pens or TWSBI pens, which are for me THE entry pens to the piston world.

Or, indeed, the 'soft fine' nib which offers some, albeit very little, line variation; it is one of the best nibs I have ever had the pleasure to write with, the Century #3778 represents fantastic value for money.

Actually, the Chinese made pens I have experienced have all performed well.

I too have had no problems with the few Chinese pens I have experienced. Got a couple that are very nice writers indeed and both cost less that $5 shipped!

Also, I don't think there is such a thing as a " beginners " pen. Nothing wrong with buying a $1,000 pen as your first pen if that is the pen you want.

I like the Kaweco Sport. If you need a clip, you can buy those. I also like their inks. Right now I am regularly using the demonstrator (clear) version of the Kaweco with a fine nib. It's a really nice looking pen and the ink flow is good.

Perhaps I have been using the wrong terminology all this time. I generally think of the long international cartridges as standard, and the shorter ones as, well, short. Is that not how it is generally understood? Of course, a pen that will take the long cartridges will take the short ones.

Either way, unfortunately, it's hard to cut down the recommendations to a manageable number. My favorite that will take a long or short international cartridge is a Montblanc Noblesse, a 1970s model which might be found at around $100, or not. And there's the Waterman Kultur, made until maybe a dozen years ago, which still should not be hard to find on eBay, and for much less. Don't pay more than about $30 U.S. shipped.

It's harder to think of a short cartridge only pen that I'd feel comfortable recommending on personal experience. The Kawecos just don't impress me, although that's based on only a couple of pens. If the cartridge adapter will work well with the Platinum 3776, I'd have no trouble recommending that, though. I've only used Platinum cartridges and converters with mine.
