SF Pen Show update
We are less than a month away from the show and there is a lot happening at the show. Thanks to the strong support from the pen community, the show is roughly 33% bigger than last year. The demand has been great and we have been sold out for over a month. The show will now be using both the main ballroom and the Grand Salon as well as the lobby area for vendors space. As a bonus, the Grand Salon will stay open later than the main ballroom. For those attending, the cutoff for hotel rooms is quickly approaching. At last check, we had a few rooms left but don’t hesitate.
PCA Auction
The 2017 SF Pen Show is hosting an auction for the PCA on Friday August 25th at 5:30 pm. The proceeds of the auction go to the PCA. A full auction catalog is now available on the show website. The catalog has pictures and descriptions of the pens up for auction. The PCA will hold a viewing of the pens on Friday afternoon (time TBD). The auction is open to the public. I have been told that additional mystery pens will also be auctioned off. You will have to attend the auction to find out what the pens are.
Pen World Pen of the Year Announcement
We are honored to host Pen World Reader’s Choice Award Ceremony this year at the 2017 San Francisco Pen Show. Join us Saturday August 26th at 4:30 pm for the award presentation where the pens chosen by the Pen World readers are honored for their work.
Classes and Seminars
This year we have a full slate of paid classes and seminars. Master penman Michael Sull is back again to teach the popular class on basic Spencerian Script. For those more advanced, Michael will also be teaching a class on Spencerian Flourishing Techniques. Joel Hamilton and Sheryl Tyree are back to teach pen repair. New for this year are classes on sketching by Janet Takahashi (full), Bookmaking by Virginia Woodruff, basics of italic handwriting by thirty year veteran Sherrie Lovler, and a class on Copperplate handwriting by the Pen Posse’s own Nikola Pang. As a special treat, Rui Saito, a guest of Stylo Art from Japan will be demonstrating Shodo, Japanese calligraphy and teach a session on making your very own Hanko (Japanese seal, $10 fee for materials).
In addition to the full slate of paid classes, we shall have a range of free seminars by John Mottishaw, Susan Thom, Gary Naka, Loren Smith and yours truly (Ricky Chau).
We will probably have a few more surprise free seminars so stay tuned.

Susan Wirth Wake
We were truly saddened to hear about the passing of Susan Wirth earlier this year. Susan was a very strong supporter of the show and gave us lots of advice as the three of us fumbled our way to running a show. So we have dedicated our normal Saturday Night social event to Susan. Join us for some live music, drinks (I believe gin is in order), and stories about Susan.
Planner Meetup
We will once again have the planner meet up. It was a great success last year so we’ll do it again. It will be hosted once again by Katherine and Pam from the Pen Posse. So bring your planners and accessories like Washington tape (ed:washi tape) and share with others who have the same passion.
Pen Addict Meetup
Vanness Pens and Brad Dowdy will once again hold a meet-up on Saturday. So come out and meet the Pen Addict and several other pen celebrities.
Ink Testing
It is a given that we will have our signature ink testing tables. I believe over 700 inks this year. This year the testing will be spread around the ballroom.
And More
We are working on a few more events and should have updates soon.
