2nd attempt... Not too sure what happened to my first attempt.
Hello from Ramstein, Germany. I've used fountain pens since the end primary school, exclusively cheap Parkers, with the exception of what I suspect was a somewhat more expensive Parker which I was given for either a significant birthday, or graduating from university. To my shame, I have no idea what happened to that pen. I remember it being very tapered, which I did not like at all! And I remember it leaving a very broad and wet line of ink.
In a previous job I edited and commented on a significant number of papers - I bought a handful of cheap Parkers and various colours of Quink (OK... Blue, black and red, so not that significant.) I loved writing with, but hated that they feathered and bled through the cheap laser paper we used. Then when we moved to Germany (I'm military, so move about frequently) let them wither and die
But - I hate writing with cheap rollerballs, so a little while ago, somewhat on impulse, I bought a local, cheap pen. It was a Faber-Castell Basic. And it was a revalation! What a nib! Still very broad, and very wet, but so smooth! Unfortunately, the ink I'd bought to go in it (FC schwarz cartridges) looked pretty horrible. More grey than black, and washed out or faded as soon as it was on the paper. After a quick Google, I learned two things that I honestly had no idea about before. First, that pens come with different nib sizes. And second that (nearly) any ink works in nearly any pen...
Not long after that a FC Basic Black Carbon in EF, 2 converters, and a bottle of Waterman's Intense Black (meh... I still have a lot to learn...) were on their way. I absolutely love it! I can write on cheap paper without it looking like I wrote with a kid's paint brush...
Now I am waiting on 2 TWSBI Eco in F and EF, with Waterman's Harmonious Green and Tender Purple to go in them. Time to start building up my ink collection (I have my eyes on Iroshizuku's Take-Sumi and Asa-Gao, and Diamine's Graphite and Pumpkin).
