Default personalised licence plates - who has them and why?

I have had a pair or two of 'cherished' plates for my vehicles in the past, partly for vanity and partly as investments as i knew someone else would probably reckon on them being equally suitable and valuable.

Any else of y'all currently rocking 'message' plates?

When the new version of GB registration plates started we bought the one, for a small amount of money, that represented both of us in initial form, either side of the number. Then the following year we repeated this so that we have one each.

They are in the format of "letter letter: number number: letter letter letter". So not particularly expensive or personalised per se, but because we bought them from the government department at the time, we have always transferred them as we replaced the cars.

This afternoon I saw one on a Fiat 500 that caught my eye: 2TBENE.

As for myself, I'll pass on getting a personalized plate, as I like to keep my relative anonymity in tact whilst on the road.

So true. Witnesses and authorities will remember a vanity plate better than a random group of letters and numbers.

I took this photo. I wonder what they were thinking?

On the other hand, just Google images "vanity plates" and you'll have hours of reading.

In the USA we don't have to buy plates from the previous owner. We only pay whatever the state of registration charges.

If you don't relinquish them when you sell the car, the plate becomes a dead plate and no one can ever have it. At least that's the rule in NJ.

There are even "special interest" plates. Such as community organization plates, special cause plates, collegiate tags, sports tags, professional organization tags, military plates and classic car plates. Some donate money to the organization they represent others just line the pockets of the DMV. Some can be had by anyone others require licensure or proof of service.

Recently seen on an antique hearse in a parade in Amarillo: "COMIN4U"...

In France and Germany the plate is a licence attached to the owner, rather than the vehicle such as in the UK, so if buying a car from Germany, one needs to get either orange German export temporary plates - or register it first in the UK and fit British plates, before driving back to the UK.

Browsing today, I see of the new '67' plates "EN67 AND" will be offered for sale at a future auction (estimated final sale price in multiples of £100k, one would guess)... and those with an interest in Chinese history will find that "KA15 HEK" is, sadly, not available.

Wow! We paid a tiny fraction of that. Our plates just look like standard plates issued in Cardiff. (Those were the initial letters required.)

A bit of an exagerrated valuation, apparently; 'EN61 AND' sold for just £12000 in 2012.

However, '69 ME' is currently being offered at c.£85k!

Really? I wouldn't want to drive around with a plate saying EN61 AND on my car if they offered to pay me to use it.

I would not want one personally but some can be good investments.

In France you cannot personalise car plates.

In Guernsey, registration plates are one to five digits long, all numbers. We joke that Guernsey invented the registration plate and therefore we don't need to use letters (cf. UK stamps never actually say "UK").

The Bailiff gets plate "1" by virtue of his office. Plate "007" went for £240,000 at auction in 2015. I believe it is now affixed to an Aston Martin.

...since we're living cheap and a personalized plate would look REAL odd on on of our rusty old clunkers, we don't. But I just saw a black Porsche Carrera S with the Wisconsin Plate "LONDON" which also struck me as a somewhat odd combo... shouldn't it be "STTGART" (for Stuttgart) or "ZFFNHSN" for (Zuffenhausen) where that beast hails from, or at least "MUNICH" to punish the BMW's???
