If you don't "think" one of your pens is "best", even being free as you are to define "best" in whatever way suits you, then "I don't" seems perfectly adequate to me, with or without the explanation of why you don't think one of your pens is best. It's the same as if someone asked "Do you want white cake or chocolate cake?" when you're not in the mood for cake. You can say, "No, thanks." or you can explain that you had 2 slices at lunch, are at that very moment contemplating the unfortunate fact that unbuttoning your trousers in public is socially unacceptable, and are loathe to eat more cake on the off chance that it would compound your difficulties.

My last name is a mangled version of the original. It was nice to discover I still have an ancestor in the national portrait gallery though.

Who turns down cake? Although I did once eat 18 Cadbury creme eggs in one day. So maybe I am not the best judge of that situation. 😂

I can tell you what my favorite pens are in my collection, or which ones I use the most, if that works.

The pens I use the most (right now) are the Pilot Vanishing Point, the Edison Nouveau Premiere in Lilac, the Platinum Lilias, and my Scriptorium Idyll.

The Vanishing Point has a stub nib that was adjusted by Daniel Smith. It writes like a dream. I also like the fact that it is retractable. I carry this one to work because it is so handy, even though in general I don't like to bring pens that cost me more than $100 in my EDC bag. I do have a Platinum Preppy on my desk at work, along with a Parker desk pen.

I use the Edison Nouveau Premiere a lot because I love the grip/section. It's perfect for me. Plus, I added an 18K cursive italic nib from fpnibs.com. I love the way my handwriting looks with it.

I love my Scriptorium Idyll because of its looks and because I like the nib a lot. It's another 18K nib--quite springy.

I bought the Lilias from Dan Smith, and again, I love the look of it (even though I did not think I would until I saw it in person). It, too, has a nice nib with a grind from Dan Smith. It's a smooth stub nib.

I have some pens I should probably let go because I don't use them, but whenever I think I might sell them, I go through such second thoughts that clearly I am not ready to get rid of them. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yeah, but that is just to have a demarkation between the shallow, inconsequential and bandwidth-sucking threads. Just housekeeping, really.

Clearly, this question is meant to generate a personal response so....
Pelikan M800. Absolutely perfect fit for me and the nibs are smooth (especially the B and above). Additionally, the pens are very easy to work on and are of high quality. The only thing that might be a detractor is the size of the pen once posted, but that too (in my opinion) results in a sublimely proportioned pen.

I admit that my experience is rather limited but after comparing several the most appealing contenders I settled for Pelikans: late moulded plastic 100s and basic M400/400/M200s. Although not the most exciting pens, for me they represent great performance and quality in really reasonable price. They are robust, reliable, well designed and perfectly made. They seem attractive enough to look at but also simple enough to not to distract or get unnecessary attention. I like to think that they well ballance form with function.

I have many favorite pens, but can name several.

Graf von Faber Castell Platino Intuition, ebony. It is a heavy pen, that adapts to the hand. I hardly need to hold it. Very very confortable.
Waterman 55, for its smooth polished body, and its springy flexible nib, that never hurts the paper.
Mabie Todd Swan 230 SF, for its finesse and elegance, the fabulous flexible nib, not so easily captured.
Pelikan 120, because it was my first pen, 50 years ago, and its soft fine nib that never skips.
Montblan 256, for the elegance of its lines, and the semi-flex fine nib that runs on the paper as if on butter. Always ready to write, even if not used for a moment.
Esterbrooks, with all their vivid and joyful colours, and the fabulous system of nib exchange.
    and,
    and,
    and

i have favourite pens - they are all those i own compared to those i don't.

more helpfully, there is one nib i will recommend to everyone - the Naginata Togi by Sailor; it is assuredly the one must have nib for everyday writing.
