    Default Lapdesk

I enjoy collecting pens, which are put to heavy daily use taking copious notes in my day job (I'm a shrink). My other hobby is woodworking (using hand tools), and I combined the two to come up with this lapdesk - more of a fun object than practical, but for use none the same.

The body is clothed in West Australian She-oak, finished in Organoil Danish Oil and wax.

There is a drawer for some of my fountain pen collection ...

A close up for you ..

    Lots of secret hiding places!

For example, there is an inner cover ...

    ... which lifts ..

    .. to reveal a hidden drawer ..

You can see all the details on my website: http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Furniture/Lapdesk.html

    Regards from Perth

Nice craftsmanship. The Jarrah wood looks lovely. Looks like it would be fun exploring all the hiding places in it.

The red vacumaticish pen looks good too.

Absolutely beautiful, Derek, as others have already commented. Love the hidden compartments and the pen storage areas, too. Are you considering adding some leather to the writing surface or will you be using it as is?

I would love to get a Victorian writing slope but they are way out of my price range - those that aren't would take woodworking skills to restore that I just don't have - and I most certainly don't have the skill, knowledge or tools to make one of my own like you did, either. I admire your great craftsmanship and I bet it was really fun to make as well.

    Hi Holly

No leather ... The She-Oak is so stunning that I would not want to cover it up. Plus it is a very hard wood, and it would not be harmed by writing on its surface. Usually I write on a pad anyway.

Incidentally Bogon07, that Vacumatic has become my favourite user. It has a flexible broad nib. Just wonderfully smooth.
