    Default Lamy Studio: Simple Swap

Nothing ground-breaking here. I'm sure this counts as soft core pen porn (or maybe only PG-13).

I swapped the sections on a black and stainless steel Lamy Studio and opted for a black nib on the black Studio. It has been done before, but here are some photos of the two pens.

The black Studio is filled with Sailor Kiwa Guro while the steel Studio currently has Diamine Matador. If you look closely at the nib, you'll see it is marked A (for Anfanger) which I had ground to an Arabic. I like my nib markings to be accurate!

Very cool. Why Lamy doesn't offer a factory "stealth" black is beyond me.

It's also timely, as I picked up an Imperial Blue just recently, and was wondering about the very same section swap - and then read that it doesn't work with the blue as it does the black. Should anyone reading this know either way, I'd be very much obliged.

I can't see why it wouldn't work in a physical sense. Now aesthetically...

But I have an Imperial Blue at work and will try to pair the black section with the blue barrel. I will report back.

I couldn't see why either, but that was the only instance of blue plus black section I could find via the well-known search engine, so I took fright. Funnily enough I only went looking from an aesthetic POV. I will await your findings. Thankee.

No compatibility issues with black section and Imperial Blue barrel.

Now I think a black section would look sharp on the Racing Green...

I wish I could just buy a Stealth (black on black) because I wouldn't want a steel section.

I can understand why you wouldn't want a steel section. Strangely, I would expect the plastic section to be less expensive to manufacture so why doesn't Lamy default to plastic?

I really don't mind the steel section. I use my Studios at work (robust and cheap) and rarely write for a sufficient length of time that the section becomes slippery...and if I do expect to write for that length of time I will use the stealth pen.

Not only would I end up with a steel section that I didn't want, but I would have to buy two pens in order to make one that I wanted. I wish Lamy would default to the black stealth with plastic section, but I also can't help but wonder if they deliberately did it this way to sell more pens?

Who did that nib for you and put the A on there?

The grind was done by fpnibs.com and I recommend them highly. The A was already on the nib as it was an Anfanger (beginner) nib. Fpnibs.com offer Arabic (architect) grinds on M and B nibs, but they ground the A nib when I asked. It is smaller than a B so the cross-stroke is still a reasonable width for people like me with small handwriting.

The black sections are available to buy separately so swapping out a steel section shouldn't necessitate buying two whole pens.

So very cool. As already said, Lamy should be doing all black versions of every pen that comes in black.

Every time this thread pops up I want one of these pens. Because it comes with the same nib as the Safari and Al-Star etc but doesn't come with the tripod shaped section I imagine it is as comfortable to write with as the Lamy Nexx. One of my problems with the slightly rubberised Nexx section is that it won't go down far enough into Diamine 30ml ink bottles for filling. It also attracts dust/bits to that slightly rubberised surface.

I see that this section looks like it is made from harder plastic and wonder if that means it will fill from Diamine 30ml ink bottles? Does anyone who has a Studio know the answer?

I have a black section on a Racing Green. The section will fit into a 30ml Diamine bottle - but only so far. If you look closely at BayesianPrior’s last post (#18) you can clearly see a very slight step down from barrel to section. At that point the pen becomes too wide for the opening. So you can fill directly when the bottle is up to 75% full but once the level drops the nib won’t reach the ink. HTH.

Well it's a slight improvement on the Nexx at least.
