Here's an ink I bought on a whim and didn't regret it!

I have a thing for grey inks and have tried many of them and settled on this one as my main one with fuya-syogan in second place. Lexington Grey just looks too black most of the time.

I was really looking forward to trying this one out, but in every pen I tried it looks like a 6H pencil: so light I can barely read it. I wish it looked like your example here.

Gris Nuage is almost the perfect grey. It is the perfect shade, with wonderful shading and behavior. I just wish it were a touch darker, its barely readable with my fine and xf nibs.

Nice review. I get the feeling the J. Herbin some inks are watery in a dilute sort of way. I have a few and still cannot decide whether I like them or not. I have experienced railroading with them. What has been your experience?

Mont Blanc Oyster Grey is what I really want but it works out too expensive when I consider how much ink I manage to plow through.

One of my favorite grey inks. I use it for drawing since it is fairly lightfast.

Price per ml isn't all that different between MB and Herbin. About 12GBP for 60ml vs about 6GBP for 30ml. Basically the same price! (Sources: penshop.co.uk and the Writing Desk). Diamine is far and away the best value in Europe though, at least for the big brands.

Thanks snedwos. Unfortunately I have to incorporate shipping costs into overall costs. There isn't anywhere I can walk into and purchase some MB ink like I can with other brands. All options available to me require extra shipping fees in the region of 2-3E extra.

This was the first ever ink I purchased. I was also surprised by how light it turned out. I recently bought Faber Castell's Stone Grey and am anxious to try it.

Thanks for the great review. I'm with many others...way too light for any use I could come up with. It might be interesting to try mixing it with a touch of black ink to see if I can get something more out of it.

plistumi, I find J. Herbin inks to generally be quite dry-flowing inks. In some pens, I find them unusable. I have had fewer problems with Eclat de Saphire, but Gris Nuage is probably the driest ink in my collection (I've got around 90 bottles), and also in my 5 least favorite inks. It's way too light, IMO.

I'm anxious to try the MB Oyster Grey I purchased over the holidays. I'll try to have a review coming up shortly.
