This past week I was in the office a couple days due to network problems at home. Fearing I might run out of ink, I took five pens out of this group:

    Left to right:

Sheaffer Balance lifetime, 1935-42? (Now sold)

Esterbrook LJ with 9048 (not very flexible)

Montblanc 221* circa 1960-70s, my favorite pen, the only one I miss if I haven't used it in a few days.

1952 Parker 21* with replaced stainless breather, which still drips if I shake it but has a phenomenal nib that surely is a dirty sin to use because it is so enjoyable.

Parker 45* with NOS fine nib

1948 Parker 51 aerometric which I got for a song in a local antique store, though it needed some nib repair.

Sheaffer Skripsert* (70s?), that I got with the 51, in original box, for very little. Great writer after tuning.

Pilot Metropolitan*, my second fountain pen and the one that started all this madness. I keep coming back to it.

    * Took these. In fact I did run two of them out of ink after all.

My usual EDC is an Esterbrook SJ with a 9450 nib unit. I have carried this pen in my shirt pocket for many years. If it ever becomes broken or lost, there are a dozen replacements ready to go.

A week ago, one of my standby pens called out to me. It is a seemingly brand new maroon Sheaffer Statesman. It has a gold and silver-colored (unobtainium?) nib. The pen, unposted is made ugly by the disproportionately large nib; posted, it is pleasing to the eye. I filled it with classic Skrip Permanent Royal Blue and found out why it looks so new. It wrote a very thin, weak line and had a lot of drag on nearly any paper I tried it on. The tines had a good slit except for the very tip. The tine tips were touching each other. I used my pocket knife to spread the tip slightly (now visible with a magnifier) and now the pen writes a fine line -- strong with variation. It is a smooth writer and I have started a new project with it. For some reason, it wants to live in my shirt pocket with the SJ. Sometimes I have to take it out of my pocket just to admire the hell out of that polished two-tone nib.

I seem to be fairly consistent, at least over the relatively short term. Comparing my currently inked pens with what I mentioned just less than a year ago, they're' all on the list. Pilot Custom Heritage 92, Lamy 2000, Parker Vacumatic, and Mabie Todd Swan 3150. When you get comfortable, you don't change as often.

Well, I've only got 3 pens right now. Really, I just got back to using FP's again. On top of that, this is really my first take at high end pens (at least I think they're high end).

Parker Jotter FP M nib (the current model). It currently has an uninteresting experimental mix that I made for a chemistry experiment. I really love this pen not only for its simplicity but it also rekindled my desire to use FP's again. I used to have an older model one but I gave it away. Now, I've had this pen for about a month or two.

Nakaya Celluloid in Goldfish pattern. It has a vanilla M nib and a pen clip (both in 14K yellow gold). I got this pre-owned and I did not even know Nakaya made celluloid pens. I really like this pen because it really reminds me of tons of fish. Well, it writes well (a bit scratchy) but it's definitely just right for my purposes because I write on "cheap" (aka generic) paper 99% of the time. Oh yeah, this pen came in for me last week so I'm still in the honeymoon stage with this pen.

My third pen is also another Nakaya. It is a Dorsal Fin V2 in Ishime Heki-tamenuri. Also has a 14K medium nib. (For those not aware, the ishime is the rough finish and the heki-tamenuri is a combination of brown and green.) Again, I like fish so the dorsal fin plays with my like for fish plus it also counts as a roll stopper. I thought this pen was going to be more like a copper brown but I was pleasantly surprised it's more green. My bedroom is green and brown! Anyway, I also just got this weekend pre-owned. I just can't wait for a new one and I don't even know when they're going to be available for order again.

Now I have a pen for blue ink, red ink, and a sweet, sweet purple ink.

Currently my 3-pen case this week (and maybe for December) is going to be :

    - Platinum Century #3776 "Black Diamond" (sort of translucent black), with a 14K Broad Cursive Italic grind by nibs.com and inked with 1670 Emerald of Chivor (even though it's tuned for 'medium flow' might be a bit too wet for that particular ink, even on my sugarcane paper, previously had Organic Studio Nitrogen in it, but would dry up hard after only a few seconds of the breather hole being exposed).

    - Lamy 2000, 14K EF, Waterman South Seas Blue, for the first time in what feels like a couple years, I stopped using Noodler's X-Feather in it, and tried putting blue in it so I could de-ink my Pelikan M640 that had the same blue.

    - Montblanc 14, 18C EF, Montblanc Irish Green

(not in my EDC case are as Conklin Crescent Filler with a Wahl 2 needlepoint semi-flex and scabiosa, Lamy Al-Star, EF with Poppy red, and a Danitrio Mae West, 18K Stub, with Apache Sunset).

Parker Sonnet - Stainless Steel. I wasn't in love with this pen, but somehow managed to sort out the issues (cartridges are better than the convertor). However, the advantage the pen has it that it posts without being overbalanced - so it is useful when writing on the bus or train when there's no table.

Sailor Purple Cosmos _ I love the nib n this pen - and Sailors inks too. Currently have a khaki green in it.

It is cool to see this thread resurrected. I am currently on a business trip and my spouse looked at all the pens I was bringing and told me to pair it down. If I run out of ink, I guess I will be forced to buy more. So here is my current load out for a month:

Pelikan M805 (Medium Stub) with Montblanc Oyster Grey
Lamy 2000 (fine) with Diamine Ancient Copper
Sailor ProGear (Fine) with Sei-boku Pigmented Blue-Black

Van der Spek three pen case

Nanami Seven Seas Tomoe River Notebook

All held in an Osprey Beta messenger bag for my long commute.

If traveling by air, or anticipate signing a credit card receipt, a Montblanc 145 Chopin with Broad nib, and a Montblanc 163 rollerball are in my shirt pocket.

Otherwise, the shirt pocket carries a Pelikan M805 with an Oblique Broad nib, and a Montblanc 146 90th anniversary Rose Gold with Broad nib and Lucky Orange ink.

    Today:

    Pelikan Stresemann with MB Tolstoy
Aurora Optima with Monteverde Jade Noir
Wahl Doric with Diamine Sargasso sea

Those in the shirt pocket. On the table, also a Pineider Avatar with some purple ink that saw some use today making notes toward the 3rd edition of one of my books.

More pens are inked, but didn’t see much use today.

I picked up a new notebook at another fountain pen store yesterday. I have to say that Leuchtturm has a special place in my heart. The paper is not double broad friendly like Tomoe River. Yet, I am glad to have a Leuchtturm back in my EDC after a year of trying other notebooks.

    IMG_2648 2.jpg

However the archive that I am working in makes me surrender my pens before going in to the reading room. So I am relegated to their pencils. Here is a picture of a cool book from 1548.
