The Professor was sick so his brother, Professor Dr Thorny Croft Danglebury and his pet kiwi Lord Sharpsure (I'm not sure of the spellings), sat in. "Thorny" is Chair of Penology at Oxford, which is "a little bit like Cambridge, but it is actually prestigious." "Men who use large notepads are trying to compensate for something."
