If I were in Japan, I would get one of the Hakase tortoise models that we cannot import into the US. Otherwise, I'd be tempted by the 17mm Nakaya Chinkin Dragonfly.

I apologize if this may seem sensible...

What about a custom made pen cabinet to store and showcase your wonderful collection?

No need to apologise, this was exactly the point of the thread, new ideas, things that I never considered.
The new house will have a study room, with purpose built storage... so I got this covered

I also nominate the idea of getting a Hakase. Having to wait up to 1.5 years for your hand crafted fountain pen means it has a very special meaning. I hope one day to have one!

Worth noting - the most valuable (to me) pen I own is vintage, probably of not huge value but was given to me by my dearest friend. Every time I write with it, I smile. Nobody else knows why. Perhaps the gift you select will also come to mean as much, no matter what the price paid.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

    Thanks for the beautiful note.
I have special pens that were my granddad's, so I know exactly what you mean.

My wife offered to buy me a "special one time deal pen" for my 40th... So I think this also counts

Already have a tortoise shell hakase, so that's out. I'll probably get the Namiki Maki-e Goldfish.
