Default Ink Review: Diamine Prussian Blue

Today I'm reviewing Diamine Prussian Blue

A blue-grey or blue-black ink from the standard range, Diamine Prussian Blue is a nicely saturated colour with a vintage look to it. It’s darker, less green leaning and more saturated than Indigo, and it flows better and feels more lubricated when writing across the page.

Prussian Blue was the first modern synthetic pigment. It’s a dark blue pigment also known as Berlin Blue or, in painting, Parisian or Paris Blue. It’s prepared as a very fine colloidal dispersion because the compound is not soluble in water. Prussian Blue is also the traditional “blue” in “blueprints” and as the basis for “laundry blueing.” (Source - Wikipedia)

I filled my Lamy Safari and my Lamy NexxM pens with it. Then left them on my table for a few days. When I went back to the pens, they both started writing straight away. No hard starts. They didn't skip once.

It exhibited excellent shading and it didn’t feather or spread on any of the papers I used it with. It didn’t show through on the HP paper either. Although it showed through slightly on some the papers listed, it didn’t show through as much as the scans suggest, and you can easily write on the reverse of all of the papers I used it with.

It's not sold as a waterproof ink but showed some water resistance.

    • Flow Rate: Good - neither particularly wet nor dry
    • Lubrication: Good - felt smooth across the page
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: Saturated
    • Shading Potential: Shading seen especially with F nib.
    • Sheen: None noticed, though I’ve seen sheen in some pictures.
    • Show-Through:
      • Field Notes
      • Clairefontaine Crokbook
      • Tomoe River 52gsm paper
      • Hobonichi Techo paper

    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen on any paper even Field Notes
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days - very easy clean-up
    • Staining (hands): Very easy clean-up off of skin.
    • Clogging: Not seen.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof, but shows good water resistance.
    • Availability: Available in 80ml and 30ml bottles plus cartridges from Diamine Inks web-site and many other outlets.

Thanks, Chrissy. As it stands, I will continue to confine my appreciation of Prussians to their (slightly tardy) arrival at Waterloo, I think.

Thanks for the review! I got a sample of this ink a while back in my quest for a blue-black with zero green in it.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

It's probably my favourite of the three you've recently shown us.

Cool Re: Ink Review: Diamine Prussian Blue

This ink is very nice, I found it to be a bit dryer than others.
The color is very neutral and gray but the end-color varies from paper to paper; just like the real prussian blue is very sensitive to pH and the final color seems to "develop" in a day or so
As you can see in your paper chromatography, the prussian color binds to the fibers and is mostly water resistant, the blue tones are not.

Great ink for everyday use, when the words matter more than the color.

Thanks Crissy. I've always loved the colour as a swatch, and it was my main ink for a while, but I found it utterly boring when looked at as a whole page of writing. Seeing your tests, it might be worth me having a go with a bigger nib than the usual F or EF, so it doesn't look too pale on the page.

I never knew it had some water resistance, so that's in its favour too.

You're welcome. Yes I prefer it in wider nibs.

I chose this as a free sample with one order. Nice blue.

I also got a bottle Prussian Blue, and inked up one of my Montblanc 342 with it.
As far as I can tell, this ink is really well behving.
I also like the color and the shading, this is imo a really good ink.

That's very good, and how interesting to see the combination between fountain pen ink and white chalk pencil.

I gave this ink and four others in the 30ml bottles to my brother for his birthday a few years back. He had me choose the colors. I had already picked my five (Massdrop).

I almost wished I had gotten the ones I gave to him. I need to either get a sample or the 30ml bottle because your review makes it seem like I picked well when I chose this one.

It was quite some time before I chose to review this ink, and I felt like I had missed out on using it for so long. I think you picked well when you chose it.
