    Default Mystery Ink #15

    Here we go again!

Attention n00bs, newbies, and lurkers: You are welcome to join. You volunteer, I pick names, I send free ink, you write with it and post your thoughts and observations.

This isn't restricted to the old-guard and knowledgeable members. If it were I probably wouldn't be the one hosting . Don't worry about your handwriting either. We don't care. If you've lurked through the Guess the Ink thread or Mystery Ink #14 you've likely seen my handwriting and thus should have nothing to fear.

I need volunteers who want to try / test Mystery Ink #15. Post here if you want a free ink sample. I'd like to have 6-8 participants. I'll leave this open for a week to allow people to sign up. If this has significantly more interest than MI #14 I might have to draw names out of a hat, but the current trend is that if you post here you get ink in the mail. International participants are welcome! Your address in Tasmania doesn't bother me. It wouldn't be the first package I've shipped there.

    Hooray, a new participant!

Nothing against the "old", just happy to see newer people joining in on the fun...at least I hope it's fun. That is the goal.

Any spots left for a newbie (from UK)? I only have a Vac pen so hopefully the sample is big enough to suck up with that lol.

Yes, and I think yes. The samples are approximately 3mL in a little 5mL vial. It should have enough ink to submerge the nib and suck up ink. Shoot me a private message with your mailing / shipping address and I'll get it out ahead of the local shipments. The last UK package needed a few extra days to cross the pond.

That puts us at 7 volunteers. Unless a half dozen more people volunteer by the end of the week I won't be needed to draw names. Everyone will receive ink.

A question to you Mystery Ink followers and participants.

Do you care if one of the mystery inks is an iron gall ink? MI #15 is not IG (nor 16 or 17 for those outside the USA who have received or will receive multiple MI's in advance). I know some are tentative and stay away from them. Others restrict IG inks to specific pens in their collection. Telling you it's an IG ink removes some of the mystery, but I don't want to upset you by supplying something you don't want to use or don't want to put into the wrong pen. What say you? Do you want me to skip the IG ink, or notify you when the IG ink pops up so you can plan appropriately with your pen selection?

Also, final participant list as follows:

    Sailor Kenshin

Thanks! Hmmm....since I usually test in either the Dollar Demonstrators or the UPS cartridge pens, I doubt IG would make a big difference to my test vehicles, but others may not feel that way.

If you're planning on using an IG ink, I would prefer to know in advance so that I could plan which pen to use for it.

Also, if you were planning on sending us Noodler's Bay State Blue, or something similar, I would like to know ahead that the ink is a known stainer.

As a very basic summary, iron gall inks contain ferrous compounds and some acidic compounds. They are designed to be more permanent than normal inks. I suppose the best description is that they etch into the paper so they can't be easily washed away. The old (original) iron gall inks were intended for dip pens. The iron content can slowly clog up feeds, and the acidic nature can slowly eat away at pen parts in fountain pens. The more recent production of iron gall inks (KWZ, R&K, Platinum) utilize less ferrous content and different acidic compounds. They are designed for use in fountain pens and as such are much more friendly to pen parts. Some people accept that new IG inks are OK. Others worry that problems will still develop.
