Old Typing Paper with numbers.... what are the number for?

I love old paper. Here's some fun old typing with numbers. What would the numbers have been used for back in the day? I'll probably use it for writing my to-do list. What would you use it for? It's nice, light 13 lb. paper which is just a hair heavier than onionskin.

My guess is it's used to tell you exactly where something appears on a page. I've seen minutes of meetings with numbers along the left side of the page and when people go through the minutes to make sure they're accurate or to make corrections, it's easier to be on the same part of the same page.

that is legal paper. with rhe reference numbers on the left. I have seen this in staplea

Used for transcripts of hearings and depositions. It allows for specific references to page and line when writing a brief and making substantive argument based on testimony. I imagine there are also other uses, but that is what it's used for in my world!
