Found this one at a local antique store: Edward Todd vest pocket pen, 16K gold plated, semiflex nib. It's about three and a half inches capped, and it works. Also found a brass-and-wood roller blotter. Worthwhile expedition!

They are all happily soaking in nice cool water, periodically changed, and already (after just a few hours) look much healthier. The National's piston was stuck but is moving some now.

I'm trying to post a pic but flickr isn't cooperating. Stay tuned; I'll keep trying.

ETa--I figured it out; just post the bb code. Derp.

I hope that none of those pens have black hard rubber sections. If they do and are in the water then soon they will no longer be black: they'll be olive green, grey or brown or any combination of those.

Cob, good info. and a reminder for all of us. I would tend to focus on the soaking to get rid of the dried up ink and not the material of the pen.

I never soak black hard rubber for the reasons I gave above. Therefore, old Onotos for example cannot be soaked, so I clean the barrels internally with a barrel brush.

Nibs, feeds and Celluloid caps and barrels go into the ultrasonic cleaner; sections I clean internally either with cotton wool buds or for the small ones, pipe cleaners.

I have had no trouble with Celluloid, but of course the effect of water on casein is disastrous. I once wrecked a Mentmore cap... Luckily for me Mabie Todd and Croxley never used casein - and neither did Onoto!

Keep in mind that color changes of hard rubber are the least of your worries. If the parts swell, well, they might get back to the original shape after drying a few days.

Finally got my Pilot Custom 823. I got it when it was on sale, but unfortunately the sale was going to end while I was going to be out of town on vacation. I had it shipped to a relative's house while I was away and I finally was able to get together with said relative and get my hands on the pen.

Damn... that thing is a smooooooth writer (got a medium nib on it). It's my first gold nib pen and, though the steel nibs still feel okay, there seems to be quite the noticeable difference that gold makes that I quite can't put my finger on.

I saw these at the DC show, but they were too expensive. I checked Rakuten and found a much better deal.

I got the black bamboo in Fine and the Cherry in medium. I really like the feel of the wood.

    A c.1933 Mabie Todd Swan rolled-gold leverless.

This one was in a terrible state, the leverless filling mechanism having rusted away and with a bent nib (as usual!). The repair wasn't made easier by the fact that this pen is narrower than the contemporary L200/205 series from which I had to obtain my spares. Anyway it works now and the nib is the proverbial "noodler."

My third My first Edison was the 2014 fall harvest pen. Then a Collier in Persimmon swirl, and now this little beauty.

You have a neat laptop. Pens just jump out of the screen (or printer). I have to look for pens and spend money in order to get mine.

I just received this minty M805 (with a sweet M nib) that I promptly filled with Edelstein Topaz. Yes, I know, the nib is not the original but… I really prefer this two color nib and… did I mention I bought this pen at an awesome price?
