I don't have a writing sample yet and I don't have the pen with me at the moment, but I will in a few day. As for the smoothing, I have no idea how to do it. Fortunately, I do have a spare one, so I can test my nib smoothing nib on that one, $2.60 is a price where I can afford a smoothing failure. Do you have any guides for that? I'd be glad to try it.

Please share your thoughts on the pen!

I know you didn't ask me, but I have one, love it, and regret that I didn't get another when they were still readily available.

With that in mind, I just ordered a couple of Metropolitan Retro Pops: a turquoise and an orange. Might even go for green before they vanish.
I watched a youtube video a few weeks ago and I knew I needed one. I received it in the mail yesterday on my way out the door to visit family. I couldn't resist so I ran back inside long enough to open it, ink it, and jump back in the car.

It isn't too buttery and it isn't too scratchy; Goldilocks would love the nib. I never write with caps posted but if you were someone who did, you wouldn't like the weight balance of the pen when posted.

It definitely fits your Calculus. Great looking pen btw.
My other writing instrument is a pencil.

I've always used four-way manicure buff sticks, cautiously, with much test-writing in between strokes. If it's good enough for Richard Binder...
My other pen is a Montblanc.

Matt's videos are very good. SBRE Brown also has a number on YouTube.

I follow both of them. SBRE Brown was, without knowing, my guide trough this fountain pen world especially at the beginning (not that I'm an advanced or veteran FP user yet). Great reviews and guides, from both of them!

As promised, here's a writing sample. I hope you can understand my handwriting, it's something I want to improve in 2016

Unless a wild Parker 51 comes along this is probably my last purchase. This was the Massdrop deal mentioned on this forum. These are Pilot Metropolitans. One is a medium nib and the other a fine nib. I have three Pilots. Prera with a medium nib and a Plumix with an italic nib. I just cant see how you can go past these pens for value. They just write without any coaxing, they give a beautiful smooth writing experience and I just think they are great. And you can easily switch various nib types.

Ranga Ebonite in Green Smooth Ripple with 1.5 nib arrived yesterday. Also, Parker 45 arrived. Such good wee pens and can be snapped up for a bargain if you search for them.

After over fifty years of being aware of the (for some) grail like desire for a solid MB149 I finally got one.

I have been writing much more since I got my hands on it. Lays down a fat wet med. line. The round ball type nib isn't a ton of fun but Ill get a stub going before long. or..not. I have a whole bunch of those in other pens.

    Let's see.....
As an early Christmas gift from my wife a Pelikan M200 Cognac (fine). Been using since Thanksgiving. Got it from a Japanese seller through Amazon.
Won a couple of auctions since Christmas. Both pens arrived this week.

Pelikan 120 Merz & Krell in black (medium) which feels like a sumgai deal.
Esterbrook SJ 9450 (red) also a very good deal.

A Christmas pen--Vanishing Point in gun metal/matte black, fine. Love the aesthetics of this Vanishing Point. Ergos work well for me till pen hits the paper. The way I hold it the barrel rotates clockwise, which starves ink on up strokes.

Although doubtful, I hope to make it work. It's a goal of mine to have a "nice" Pilot model w/ fine nib, but aesthetically I don't like much of what they offer.

A Desiderata Deadalus, but ... I feel a little conflicted. I think I actually prefer to use an oblique pen holder for this kind of writing. I'll give it a few more days, though I have the distinct feeling that I may let this one go.

Get the nib ground to an oblique and you'll be fine. I also rotate my pens so I *always* have nibs ground to oblique before delivery if possible. If not they go straight out to Pendleton Brown to get fixed up for my weird grip.

The purple one is nice. I have it, too (Fine point). I have to say, though, I think I like the Medium better (I have it in orange).

I purchased the medium. It's a good pen. Although I prefer a larger grip.
