I’ve never been in the military or intelligence — just the most lumpen of the lumpen-intelligentsia — but i always do crosswords in pen. I tend to use drier inks most of the time, but if i use my xf Sailor, ink doesn’t matter too much. I also use a Parker 61 and various very fine nibbed Sheaffers & 51s. My parents always did them with some special kind of Pilot rollerball which they’d by the gross. Come to think of it, my mother in law always does crosswords with a black Bic.
Why? I hate the way pencil feels on newsprint. The paper will tear it you erase, so i see no advantage to pencil.

Convey Stewarts BHR with a Duro Nib
Mabie Todds Pencil and Dip pen combination. Unfortunately the nib is missing. However the pen holder is a fantastic piece. It takes dip pen nibs of any size.
Latest inbound pen is a handmade "Prime" by Mythic Pen Co. turned from a resin poured by the intractable Jonathon Brooks. This will probably be (FC notwithstanding) the last of this type of pen that I buy, unless I can swap out this with a Ghost Koi version. The current Truphae resin more or less ticks the boxes of the Ghost I think, so we'll see.
Why the last? Well, there's only so many Jowo nibs I can usefully employ, and I would like to try some other gold nibs.
After weeks of searching and months of waiting...it's finally here!

Green striped Conway Stewart No. 36 with a medium Italic nib.
The one on the left, made by Brad at Mythic Pen, and the material is by Jonathon Brooks. It's a great pen in the hand, and other than vintage materials (and some Italian materials that I've not seen yet) Jonathon probably pours the best pen rods in the business. It's a shame I can't get my favourite of his materials, but it is good to hear that he is recovering well from his recent health issues. Hopefully he will be back to pouring more wonderstuffs (which may occasionally appear on the secondary markets for lowlifes like me).
Now that I have these 4 custom made pens by 3 different makers, and have used another by two other makers, I feel confident in stating that there is no significant difference in quality in this market. This is a good thing though, as one can be assured of high quality while picking and choosing among material makers and pen designers.
The Mythic Pen is the Prime model. Fits perfectly in my hand, doesn't post, doesn't need to. Just need to choose an appropriate nib for it, and the ink is going to be Sailor Shigure!

That's a beauty, EOC!
Found a deal on this EF Pelikan 140 with the box and paper. Looking forward to getting to know it but I'm already enjoying it.

Graduation gift to the first of three! We went, all covid-proof, together to a bricks&mortar store for her to pick the size (600) and nib (B) and color. I got a set of Sheaffer from my parents, and now pass on the tradition with a set of Pelikan to my kids. Good Fountain Pen Day. Proud father.
Today the postman brought me a wartime Soennecken 510 S (the austerity version with Steel nib and no cap gold rings)

Nice example with a medium semi-flex steel nib

Very cool. Is it a lever filler? Though the back end looks like it might screw off - or at least twist.

High quality resin demonstrators!
- Pineider Avatar UR (M) - inked with Taccia Uguisu Olive Green
- Taccia Spotlight (M, steel nib from Sailor) - inked with a Sailor Black cart
These babies look and feel like glass. There's a nice weight that makes you know you're using a pen but isn't too heavy. The Avatar is a little heavier, but they're both nice and solid. They're postable, but you don't need to do it. And the nibs are terrific. The Taccia's Sailor Medium is of course finer, which makes them a perfect combination.
PS - that Taccia Olive Green is gorgeous. I'll likely be ordering a bottle after I use up this sample.
An eyedropper-filled pen with a valve system to prevent burping... 3.2 ml of ink!
Opus 88 Demonstrator with a broad steel Jowo nib. Only problem so far is that it skips a bit. I don't have a loop, but I suspect baby's bottom on the nib.

Just ordered a metal version of the famed 601. I had given the other three away to friends and family.
