I was at the CA Pen Show this weekend and looked forward to meeting the people from Santini, the Italian pen maker. I had seen their pens online for a couple of years and was hoping to try them in hand, especially anticipating seeing their in-house-made nibs. I was not disappointed - they were charming to talk with, and I came home with a new pen I had seen the week before, the Libra model from a silver material called Perla. The main feature I had been interested in was their use of bronze furniture, which this pen sports. I love the combo. Haven't taken pics of mine yet, this is from their site.

My first Parker VP. Absolutely stupendous pen! The capping experience is like nothing else, the section is like a large 75. And the nib writes just like my grandfather’s 75…precise, smooth, glassy and almost gummy, in the best of ways.

I can't recall buying pens for quite some time. Yesterday, my wife and I drove to her favorite shop to try on some nice clothes. After lunch, we walked into another favorite shop that's full of eclectic new and vintage merchandise. I'd never seen pens there before, and frankly I was very surprised to see them. (I'm shocked, shocked to find that pens are being sold in here!*)
Anyway, I came home with three pens, leaving three behind that I may return for. The two Balance IIs - a '98 Cobalt Glow RB and a '97 70th Anniversary LE FP - are pristine and will be available shortly, but I think the '95 Legacy I touchdown is staying with me...for a while, anyway. Its touchdown gold converter works quite well, so I won't have to resort to a bar-type converter.

Just purchased. Early 80s MB 149, 18C (France) tri-tone, split feed, EF.
March 1. Turns out it's a 60s model with a delightfully soft nib. Friction fit piston, double grooves in the feed. Tres bueno!

Add Lightness and Simplicate
A rare impulse buy: I just received a Leonardo Momento Zero in Jonathon Brooks "Forged Patina", a run of 100 for Pen Chalet. They did a nice job of picking a pen (at my request) that leaned into the earth tones and just touched on the turquoise. It ends up looking a lot like the patina and corrosion spectra, and quite organic. Paired, for now, with Robert Oster Bronze. As with all of the LOI pens I have owned, the fit, finish, and function are all very nicely done.

What stunning material! Verdigris and rust, you're right, it's all corrosion and antique patina - but also struts its colours like a peacock!

Buying online, especially from auction sites, puts you at some disadvantage when judging by a few photos. I usually adjust my expectations accordingly. Today I had the opposite and received an item that is even better than presented. I don't have a lot of UK pens, and just a few Conway-Stewarts, but often at pen shows I would admire the ones in their 'cracked ice' celluloid. When I saw this #28 for sale I thought, yeah, this might be nice. It is. Here are a couple quick phone pics after it arrived today:
After a really crappy month, this made my day. Be good to one another.

Well, with my new hobby I decided to get more into the bottled ink stuff instead of always using ink cartridges in my fountain pens... So I got me two non-cartridge using piston fillers, one is a made-in-China yellow-transparent TWBSI Eco with a stub nib, and the other a beautiful blue marbled Indian-made Kenwrite Heritage with a special Ultra-Flex nib. The TWBSI will be filled with Monteverde’s “Brown Sugar” ink, while the Kenwrite will get Pilot’s Iroshizuku Syo-Ro “Dew on Pine Tree” dark turquoise in it’s barrel…
~Such a pleasurable, peaceful hobby; I find even the names of the many available inks absolutely delightful!
And it doesn’t have to be all that expensive either; one of these pens was $45, the other $32, and the larger capacity 60ml ink bottles were only around $15 each! {~Of course the pens can multiply like ‘lil bunnies if one doesn't watch 'em carefully y'know... I think after these two new ones I'll hafta put a moratorium on buying fountain pens for a while. ~Ahhh, but they do come in so many different beautiful colors tho... ‘;>})

I had FPs similar to this as a very young school kid, but I forget zactly how they worked? Does one raise the lever first, then insert the nib into ink (we had inkwells in our desks then) and then by releasing the lever an internal rubber bladder (or sac) gets vacuum-filled?
~Also does your really attractive 'cracked look' FP still have a workable internal sac, or do you know how to replace them?
Not in the market for expensive pens. I've kept a half-dozen, but I don't leave those at work. I've gotten tired of the low value pens I do have at work, and they don't have fine enough nibs for use on bad paper. Knowing the dollar's strength against the Yen and Yuan, I thought maybe there might be some good deals out there. Well, the middlemen seem to be "shielding" the bulk of the US market from weakness of the Yen. I found a Sailor with a 14K EF nib for around $60 that it is in transit from Japan. We'll see how that works out (the Japanese EF nib might be too fine for me), but since my favorite pen is the MB146, I was intrigued by the Wing Sung 629 and ordered one of those. Also ordered a Wing Sung 699 (Pilot 823 imitation). Those are still in transit. But then I noticed the Asvine brand. I passed on the P20 because I (almost) always post, and I never end up liking pens that don't post deeply. But the Asvine V126, another Pilot 823 knockoff, looks a little different from the Wing Sung 699. It looks better. So I bought a couple of those with EF nibs. I'm blown away by the quality for less than $30 each. Even these two are not identical. The teal one's cap takes 1.75 turns, while the clear one's cap takes less than 1.5 turns. Seems that they have actively been improving these pens. We'll see how it performs at work. Hopefully I can retire the cheap pens I have been using there.
