I really enjoyed it, Lloyd. It was like seeing a film made by Chaplin/Keaton and Tati. There were so many references to so many other films, yet the film was unique and it was visually one of the most beautiful films, I've ever seen.
    Thank you.

At a long time ago, you could render, your DVD player region free. Maybe the best way is to get a region free, DVD player....
BTW I found a DVD, region 4, on ebay Australia

A blend of cultural documentary and gentle comedy, set in Bhutan. A self-centered urban guy gets assigned to the remotest school on earth, at high altitude in the Himalaya. Amazing landscape.

Managed to snag a brand new copy for Region 2 (my DVD player plays other R2 movies I own, so hopefully it should work). Not bad at USD$11 including shipping! Just waiting now.

Re-watching ones I had not viewed in ages. This time it was a return to 'Das Boot'. Somehow it was much less interesting this time. This film simply did not age well.

Yazeh- Have you seen "Ordet"? It's possibly my favorite non-English movie (not a comedy, either)? It's at archive, too.

I am not so sure. I saw his Passion of Joan of Arc, but this one I doubt. I'll see if I can convince my wife to watch it. Though I'm sure she has seen it

"The Tall Target" - pretty good historical fiction about Lincoln's inauguration.

"Earth versus the Flying Saucers". Not as bad as you'd expect.

I saw that in 1957, at the Butler in Tonopah, Nevada, a decrepit theater in a busted mining town, with dusty red velvet stage curtains and trunks of moth-eaten costumes on the upper deck. My folks let me go alone, as it was only about three blocks from our house.

That movie scared the crap out of me. The worst part was that the aliens had helmets without any opening for eyes, mouth, etc. And no fingers.

When I crept out of that theater to walk home in the dark (no streetlamps in Tonopah) I could sense aliens in every shadow. I finially made it home and dove into bed, after putting a big kitchen knife under the pillow. Only to awake after midnight and see an alien sitting at the kitchen table.

I pulled the covers up and squeezed my eyes shut. Then took another peek: still there. Holy Shit!

I eased the knife out and rolled onto the floor away from the kitchen, then crawled inch by inch around the bed to the kitchen door.

    It was still there.

I tensed and raised the knife, worried that it might not penetrate the metal helmet, lunging forward to inflict great bodily harm. . .

On the electric percolator, which was set on the table, reflecting light from the window. My Dad's gray work shirt was draped over a chair, so from my bed it seemed like the body.

I stopped just before assassinating it, which would surely have roused my parents and shamed me beyond bearing. Replacing the knife in the kitchen drawer, I gave the percolator a ferocious scowl, and went back to my bed.

The phrase "flying saucer" didn't become popular until the late 1940s.

My neighbors in a Utah canyon were flying saucer cultists. They didn't like the term, referring to the visiting ships as "vessels."

The vessels generated lenticular clouds as a disguise, and sent scanners to earth in the form of hawks, owls, etc. The mountain above our houses was a sacred pyramid, a landing spot in the 9th dimension for vessels, that was hollow and would open to provide a refuge for the faithful when the endtimes race war erupted and the gravitational field of the earth reversed.

Hard to keep a straight face, at times.

But good preparation for dealing with Republican whackos.

No drugs. Actually, they were far-right Christian conspiracy nuts, white supremacists who believed there would be a race war to usher in the Last Days. They were always coming up with weird predictions, e.g. the UN would take control of the US government and start printing all the paper money with red ink. Seriously.

School Life (La Vie Scolaire) set in a middle school in t. Denis, a Parisian banlieue (poor suburb). By turns moving, funny, and disturbing, it follows a young, crusading counselor, played by Zita Hanrot, who lights up the screen.
