Just watched The Mauritanian, with a good cast: Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch, Shailene Woodley. Tahar Rahim is outstanding.



The film recounts the frantic seizure of suspects after the 9/11 attacks and their consequent imprisonment, torture, and murder, without any sort of due process whatsoever. The combination of the heavy-handed application of the CLASSIFIED stamp and outright lies is damning. While the film ends with the main character's eventual release and repatriation, it also left me feeling that the U.S. military was severely corrupted and forever stained by the operation of the concentration camp at Guantanamo and their vicious and criminal behavior has gone unpunished to this day.

Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, for the second time after several years. I was puzzled by some bits, such as the mother's sudden engagement to the bishop and the children lying on the floor in their mother's room when they were at the same time hidden in a big trunk downstairs to make an escape.

Poking about online, I found that it was produced as a series for Swedish television, more than five hours total. The version that showed in theaters, just over three hours, had quite a few major cuts, which likely contained the transitions and continuity that I felt were missing.

If you like weighty films, it's worth seeing.

Hiroshima, Mon Amour, said to be a French classic, one of the best films ever made, proved a disappointment to us both.

The message seemed forced or contrived, with an unearned reliance on the setting, and the plot was that of a strangers in the night rom-com with frequent flashbacks.

I loved it, although not in the way it was intended (as this allegory for human inaction on climate change—it was a flawed movie in that respect). The commentary it made about truth and information flow in our present society was excellent and often hilarious.

A very well-made, although not especially satisfying film. I don't mind deciphering the motivations of characters, but Leda (Colman) was frustratingly opaque.

An Aussie dog flick that's not the usual mawkish weeper. Set on the stunning Shipwreck Coast, with the usual local colour suspects.

It was the same thing with scene of a marriage. It was a TV show then cut to a movie...

English attitude, perhaps, but we have to remember two things about Chamberlain. Firstly, he served during WWI And knew first-hand the horrors and the cost. That was perhaps his greatest motivator for trying to prevent -- or at least forestall -- another war. Secondly, he knew just how poorly prepared for another war Britain was in 1938. This may have motivated him further to delay what he may have recognised as the inevitable as long as possible to allow Britain to become better prepared.

We also have to credit him for recommending Churchill, who no one wanted as PM to the King because he believed WSC was the right man for the job, and the only one who had the drive and the wisdom to actually achieve victory.

Saw 1945, a Hungarian movie in Black and White.
I recommend it for those who like understated art movies. The film is profound/masterful. I believe one can see through with Prime..
