Last night my daughter and I watched Solo (about young Han Solo) on the DVD. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it because I'm a big Harrison Ford's version of Han Solo fan and I didn't think this new production would do justice to the character.

It turned out to be a great movie that I enjoy very much! They don't skimp on quality and effects, and it feels like part of the Star Wars universe because they treat the events continuity with respect.

Although I still prefer the original Han Solo, this one is not bad at all. And yes, he shot first.

Slogged my way through all 160 minutes of Quentin Tarrantino's latest: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

It was, in a word, execrable. Nearly three hours of a couple of self-indulgent ideas desperately in search of a movie.
DeCaprio turns in a decent enough perfromance, but the rest of the cast are given little more to do that pose (Pitt, Robie) or play charicatures (Pacino, Olyphant, et al). The slavish attention to period in terms of music, costume and the impeccable set dressing is given the lie by the cowardly ending. I'm giving this one five turds.

The King with Timothee Chalamet. A new version of Shakespeare’s Henry V, comparable to the Hollow Crown production only with modern English usage. You will not hear the Band of Brothers speech here, but we loved it for the directing, the production, and that riveting young main actor.

A surprisingly fun and slightly offbeat action flick: American Assassin. This is meant to be a prequel to the lengthy Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn. The choice of the boyish Dylan O’Brien to play Mitch was unexpected and added the mischief of an unimposing “Bada$$” to the mix.

Not a movie but I did binge watch 8 episodes of "The Mandalorian".

This is great Star Wars story and can't wait for the next season.

    I have spoken.

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. It was a superb movie that I can't find the right words to justify enough why I really like this film. The details are also impeccable.

The Irishman - not the best mafia movie, slow action, decent.
Klaus - very good animation, great story, possibly a new Xmas classic
Ford vs. Ferrari - good movie, the American side of the story. I want the Italian story side too!

I was in the mood for film this weekend. I saw "And God created Woman" (1956) with Bridgitte Bardot & Jean-Louis Trintignant. Bardot is fun to watch.

I also decided to revisit "Chinatown". John Huston is better than i remembered as the menacing & incestuous eminence grise behind LA's expansion. There were lots of desk pens in this one. They looked like Balances or possibly Vacumatics. Dunaway and Nicholson use one to sign a contract.

"Knives Out" Nothing of social significance, no groundbreaking cinematography. An old fashioned murder mystery which is fun because Daniel Craig with a southern drawl, and Captain America not the herl.

1917. So intense that daughter and I were exhausted by the ending. Re-watched Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old.

Official Secrets, on the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, when the US and British governments, under Bush and Blair, acted with contempt for the truth, the rule of law, the public will, and human decency.

Katharine Gun, a low-ranking British analyst, got a blanket message from the US National Security Agency requesting secret intelligence info in order to blackmail UN Security Council members to support a resolution calling for war. She leaked the contents of the message to the press, hoping to prevent the war, was charged with a breach of the Official Secrets Act, and threatened by the British government.

A gripping political drama, with a superb cast.

    Sounds interesting, Chip.

For me it was Raging Bull. I didn’t really like it when i saw it way back when. The pathological masculinity repelled me. I decided to give it another chance after seeing an interview with Scorsese where he said part of his interest in Lamotta came from his resemblance to the Anthony Quinn character Zampanó in la Strada. After sitting through Raging Bull again, i still think Anthony Quinn, Fellini & Tullio Pinelli’s brute is more tragic, maybe because he is more human. Fellini shows you more of Gelsomina which delivers more of the impact of Zampanó’s brutality. More Cathy Moriarty might have helped, since you do feel the Brute’s estrangement from his brother and his family, who collectively get more screen time. The little things are good — the film is known for its editing — and i enjoyed the character actors, especially Frank Vincent.
