We watched Black Panther last night. Liked it but didn't absolutely love it. On the other hand I'm no Marvel Universe fan either.

Tired to watch Barbie...After 35 minutes gave up. Didn't like any of the characters
All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt - 2023 - Art house film. Extreme closeups with very long takes. It was claustrophobic and even with fast forward couldn't get into the story.

Tried to watch a few Christmas movies. They often have the tendency to turn one braindead:
Christmas in Scotland (TV Movie 2023) - At times, I was wondering if the actress was AI generated, or her voice, or the script. And boy, the only thing Scottish about the Scots was the accent.

Tried to rewatch Christmas in Connecticut 1945 - the highlight of the movie, are the scene of S.Z. Sakall and Sydney Greenstreet (who both played in Casablanca.

I saw the non Christmas movie, with the excellent Andy Serkis (Gollum) and David David Tennant. (Plus lot of fountain pen scenes)

I love 'Cuddles' Sakall and Sydney Greenstreet, and we watch Christmas In Connecticut every year.

Not exactly a movie, but Royal Covent Garden's 1984 production of Die Fledermaus, with Kiri te Kanawa, Hermann Prey, and Placido Domingo conducting the orchestra. It's three hours long.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

To think I used to listen and go to operas

    Watched:
An immigrant worker at a pickle factory is accidentally preserved for 100 years and wakes up in modern-day Brooklyn.

It was surprisingly funny, witty and soulful. With a few nods to Fiddler on the roof

The Count of Monte Cristo 2024.
Excellent new French Adaptation. Very well adapted, lean.

Each shot looks like a painting.

    Quote from the movie:

Leonard Lowe: We've got to tell everybody. We've got to remind them. We've got to remind them how good it is.
Dr. Sayer: How good what is, Leonard?
Leonard Lowe: Read the newspaper. What does it say? All bad. It's all bad. People have forgotten what life is all about. They've forgotten what it is to be alive. They need to be reminded. They need to be reminded of what they have and what they can lose. What I feel is the joy of life, the gift of life, the freedom of life, the wonderment of life!

    Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
“Why?” you might ask. Because it was there, I couldn’t sleep, and it was “free.”
The Furiosa origin story, lots of gore, good but not great cars, B grade subs for Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Smaller scale than Fury Road, which is where this movie ends and FR begins. Kinda mindless. Kept thinking it’s a long way since Mel Gibson, but with better effects.

Fanfare of Love 1935 French film:
Two unemployed male musicians disguise themselves as women so they can join an all-female orchestra heading for the French Riviera.

Rings a bell? It was remade into a West German film, Fanfaren der Liebe and then into the masterpiece Some like it Hot.... in 1959 by Wilder.
It's quite a curious film. The original story is so, so dated, like a very bad Astaire/Rogers, movie.

I also tried watching the First Billy Wilder movie. Bad Seed, a French film her co-directed. It's more for an art historian. But the use of camera is creative. But if you're a fan of gangster-ish movie it might be for you.

    The Fox 2022 (German movie)
It's a story of an introverted Austrian soldier, who bonds with a wounded fox cub during the invasion of France.
It's based on a true story of the director's great grandfather. It has elements of the Little Prince.

Excellent story telling, restrained, focus and poignant....

    The Boy And The Heron

    2023? Studio Ghibli.

Long-awaited, and I finally saw it, but I don't know what to make of it. Seems as though writer/director Miyazaki threw bits of all his films into a cocktail shaker, then haphazardly spilled them out. More gore and ick than I expect from this team, as well.

While I liked the young hero, and love the background art, I don't think (unlike most of his films) that this one quite hangs together.

    Gladiator II - 2024
Violent, gory, but watchable thanks to Fast forward. Not as good as the first one.
However, sadly its a reflection of the modern society, The Gladiator arenas, replaced with sporting /concert venues or streaming series, where a disgruntled society is duped with distraction

    Ne supra crepidam
