The Banshees of Inisherin, which I found rather mournful: not a deal of hope or gaiety in it, but more than a fair share of obsession and stubbornness. Excellent acting. One reference to Irish lit was the wee black donkey, recalling a famous story by Pádraic O Conaire, born in Galway in 1882, titled: M' Asal Beag Dubh (My Little Black Ass).

Much of it was filmed on Inís Mor (Big Island), the largest of the Aran group, which I've not visited, alas. But I recognised Keem Bay on Achill Island as the setting for Colm's cottage. The house was built for the film and then taken down and the site restored. Same for the local pub.

    Looking SW from Keem beach.

The beachkeeper's cottage and a wonderful bridge of cut stone. I think it must have been a lifeboat station at one time: out of sight to the left there's a storage building and a currach upturned with its bow to the sea.

For all its grandeur, the bridge is crossed by a road that ascends a steep slope and ends above the sea, traversed mostly by sheep. I'd guess it was one of the public works erected by the starving during the Hunger, to justify their meager keep. There's also a stone wall running straight up a steep slope. Throughout the west of Ireland, there are quite a few towers and such of the same origin, collectively known as Follies.

A French film from 1985 with Americanized title of "Vagabond". Raw, non-judgmental study of a 20- something female vagabond. Fictional but plausible. Riveting.

The Scarlet Empress (1934), starring Marlene Dietrich, directed by Von Sternberg. Inspired by the rise of Catherine the Great to the throne of Russia, it's an extravagantly strange film. The characters are caricatures, mostly. The costumes are weirdly ornate. The sets render the Imperial palace as a Grand Guignol hall of horrors, decorated with gruesome sculptures and gargoyles in the place of saints, in a fog of incense and maddening music.

Perhaps intended as a comment on the grotesquerie of empire, royalty, and orthodox religion, it doesn't hit its mark so much as obliterates it.

Doctor Zhivago (finally available on Netflix). Incredible craftsmanship by David Lean. The imagery is magnificent and tells quite a lot of the story. The score by Maurice Jarré resembles his work on Lawrence of Arabia, particularly in the passages that introduce the main theme.

The one thing that I disliked was the fakery employed in lighting Julie Christie's face to emphasize her eyes.

Something a little more lowbrow: we just finished bingeing “Better Call Saul”. Loved every minute.

    Two VERY unrelated films
➤ 1925's "Master of the House". Superb cinematography for the 1920s in a tale of a brutish husband/father being put into his place
➤ 1985's "Fallen Angels" a funny, sad, violent, dark window into 3 lonely outsiders lives.

Just finished a new Netflix series, The Night Agent. I mostly avoid the whole CIA/FBI/terror threat/conspiracy genre.

But we both enjoyed it. Good characters, no big-name stars, solid production. Some elements of the underlying conspiracy stuff didn't make sense to me, but that wasn't serious enough to put me off.

No, but that idea could make for a good movie!

She Said, a dramatic account of how two reporters at the New York Times broke the story about Harvey Weinstein's serial rapes and reign of sexual terror at Miramax.

Very well acted, great cast (including Ashley Judd who went on the record about Weinstein's crimes).

The story, which could have been amped up with extravagant music, weird camera angles, etc. was told in a modest and self-effacing manner. Refreshing in these overwrought times.
