Saw the Le Prénom (What's in the name?) for the nth time.
One of the best French films of the last ten years. Its dialogue heavy, witty, funny and poignant.

Jar you wouldn't like that one

Far from Men (Loin des Hommes), set in Algeria during the war for independence. Lots of dramatic tension and a thought-provoking screenplay. In French with English subtitles:

@Chip where did you see it? Seems interesting...
If you liked that you might want to check, Ceux que jour doit à la nuit, (What the day owe to night) and Of Gods and Men with Lambert Wilson...

@Lloyd in case you didn't catch this article in NYTimes. THE MAN WHO INVENTED MOTION PICTURES....

Watched again, a French comedy... Serial Bad Weddings.Which has turned into a franchise. I'm not sure who came up with that translation.
Orignal title: Qu'est qu'on a fait au bon Dieu?, which translate freely, What have I done to God, to deserve this?

A French Catholic couple sees their life get turned upside-down when their four daughters get married to men of different nationalities and religions.

A film based on a play by Brian Friel, Dancing at Lughnasa.

Set in Donegal (without the usual sentimental Irish crap) about the fierce allegiances and rupture of a family.

American Pastime (2007) set in a WWII Japanese relocation camp in the Utah desert. The focus is on a character loves American stuff: he plays jazz sax and baseball.

It was filmed in Utah, but the screenwriters got a couple bits wrong.

First, the pitcher (from a rural Mormon town) is chewing tobacco, which would never happen in public. Second, the announcer goes swear-bear poking fun at the Japanese names.

On the whole, it was excellent.

You got me curious. I'll see if I can watch it tonight...

About the artistic license, Do you mean in the 1940s people didn't chew tobacco in public? Or did not make fun of strange names?

"A Man There Was" from 1917. Quite a moving picture.

My family is from Utah, since the late 1840s. While I'm not Mormon, I know the place well. Naturally, there were folks in small towns who used tobacco and alcohol, but never in public, let alone in front of a game crowd that included women, children, and church officials. The pitcher was a local businessman, who would be at pains to avoid scandal. Same deal with the cussing. The announcer was pronouncing Takashita as Take a shit uh. That would have brought one of the church stalwarts to the booth, admonishing that women and children were present, etc.

Utah rednecks and bigots are quite restrained, compared to those in the former slave states. They are more likely to whisper their views and then shun offenders.

Isn't it incredible how the trauma of having been abducted by parent is transfered through generations?

I found the whole dynamic of the family (or I should say families) mind-boggling. In particular, the level of acceptance by the women of the patriarchal abuse of power. You've reminded me that it's one I wanted my daughter to see, and she's old enough now.

The Longest Day. I DVRd it recently and watched it over the last two evenings.

It's a D-Day (WWII allied invasion of Normandy) film. The attention given to historical military detail was, I suppose, par for the period, but that detail was poor compared to the newer Band of Brothers. On the other hand, there was only one bit of deliberate insertion of falsehood (the "Bitte, bitte!" scene on Pointe du Hoc) in this film. Thus it compares well against the much more recent Saving Private Ryan, which contains multiple wild fantasies.

I give The Longest Day a rating of "Pretty good for a 1960's war film".

Watched it when it first came out. And it was definitely one of the longest days I've yet experienced.
