Pumping Iron. On the short side but a fascinating documentary.

We just watched "Event Horizon" from 1997. I didn't like it.Far too scary and too many stupid moments where you know something is about to happen and make you jump. Sam Neill looked very different to when he was in Jurassic Park.

If you had watched Event Horizon you might remember it as being where the Event Horizon was a space exploration vehicle that had explored close to Mercury but then disappeared for 7 years. Sam Neill was a man haunted by his wife having committed suicide and had built the vessel to explore through a black hole and it apparently returned with it's core "alive" and all of the crew dead. Weird and really scary moments throughout when the crew of the vessel that finds it get on board.
I will look out for The Dish. Thank you.![]()

The Dish is mad good. There are quite a few excellent Aussie flicks, including that dusty jewel: The Road Warrior.
While Herself was in Colorado visiting a friend, I binged the first few episodes of new series, One Piece. Didn't expect I'd fancy it, but have enjoyed other live-action shows based on manga, and indulged my curiosity.
Really liked it. Attractive, engaging cast. Snappy, zany dialogue. Unique villains. Not much gore. Excellent CG settings (cities, ships, monsters) reminiscent of Game of Thrones in vividness and detail.
My dearest (a classic film buff) doesn't share my taste for that sort of thing. So I'll have to watch the rest of the season on my iPad.

Darkest Hour. Gary Oldman is one of the most impressive actors in recent times.

Henri Dauman: Looking Up.
We've seen Henri Dauman's photographs, but until this documentary was released only a fortunate few knew about his life and photography.
Inspiring and touching.

We tried watching the new Book Club. It was unwatchable. The same went with Maybe I do, with a host of veteran actors. Pitiful, trite and irrelevant![]()
Similar that I couldn't watch five minutes of Shanghai Nights with Jackie Chan—-and I love his movies. This, however, isn't an actual Jackie Chan movie. He just acts in it, with all its irritating anachronisms as well as every cinematic cliche in the book.
Watched Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro instead. 💝

If there's a heaven, Miyazaki has earned a spot at the head table.
From Up On Poppy Hill, another Studio Ghibli, this time a collaboration of Miyazaki the Elder and son Goro. A charming film set in an evocative era about a budding romance, and high school students trying to save a beloved old building.
Why does every Studio Ghibli film make me want to live in that setting?

Enjoyed, the swashbuckling, witty, sometimes inane story, with the great Gérard Philipe.
Rewatched Casablanca. They don't make movies like this anymore. Nowadays, it's all about vertigo inducing immersive camera movements, which often times leaves one seasick![]()

Ooo, thanks for the reminder, Yazeh.
For a long time I did not want to see Casablanca, not being a fan of Bogart until I watched him in an old movie about investigating a military mystery. Then I thought, Claude Rains, YES. I ended up loving Casablanca. Maybe we can find Fanfan.

Incredible when you read how they made it, not knowing the ending. The lighting, the dialogue, the shots are amazing and Claude Rains and all the supporting class is fantastic.
Fanfare is not a masterpiece. It's a light, tongue in the cheek farce. They remade it, by the way![]()

Ocean Waves deals with small town high school students and their personal drama. A studio Ghibli movie, but not directed or written by Miyazaki, this film is more or less a soap opera.
However, it's intriguing not only in its use of certain effects, like 'letterboxing' certain shots on a white ground, but also the character development of the lead, his friend, and the girl from Tokyo who disrupts their lives.
