Good advice. Finding another 400 tortoise in this condition is a crapshoot for me really, and selling... well, that's a big risk too considering my reputation. I kinda lucked into this pen as it is. Looked on Mr Propas' website but didn't see any nib units for sale.

Hadn't thought of that (I'm kinda stupid you see). Have now sent an email to Rick Propas.

You have certainly have a reputation...for self-deprecation. Seriously, I don't know what reason anyone could have to deem you an untrustworthy seller!

I'm not an untrustworthy seller, very far from it, but certain people on here have already condemned me in perpetuity for making mistakes. Glass houses and all that.

More like flagellation, of self and pens.

If I were a maker (sorry) I might hesitate to sell to you (this based only on how some past threads on recent purchases started out appreciative and quickly went pear-shaped), but I'd have no issue at all buying from you. So unless you further malign that lovely BB 400 you'll have no problem shifting it for a good price and funding something you'd really like.

    As ever, good luck.

I'm not known for mistreating nibs. No idea of pricing, which is another reason to seek just the part - I think all the pens I've sold were under-priced compared to market value. Can't do anything about the makers;- once you've been judged by them there's never going to be any forgiveness.

As can be seen, my handwriting is a bit crap and the fat nib doesn't really do it any favours.

Yes, 'mistreatment' of nibs in this case leads only to reputational damage. As for makers, my impression (again based only on some past threads) is that they were judged first.

Handwriting sample looks fine to me. Enviable script and nib.

Anyway, that's all by the by. Without input from any of the hard to find dealers of vintage parts it doesn't look promising to find a more suitable nib. I suppose i could start a small Pelikan collection of pens i don't use. A bit of waste, but but not a concern in the collector's mindset I guess.

Yeah, still not buying that. Blame my obscure phrasing. You called it 'this bad nib'. It isn't, and you know how to use it. So the nib has been trash-talked but not actually trashed.

No story has only one side.
True. To be fair, the makers don't really get to present theirs.

Plenty of sensible suggestions already ...

    Flagellation, that’s a perfect description.

As always, your writing looks cool, you have cool pens, but you seem to be unable to get some satisfaction with them.

Adapt your writing to the nib, e.g. go a little big bigger and voila you will have impressive line variation with your pen not worth than using a full flex nib (which seems to be your hunting grail).

All nib sizes and variations have their special beauty it’s up to the user to discover and master it.

Prefer to think of it as brutally honest self-criticism.

I'll never understand why anyone would say that my writing is cool when it clearly is not. Cool pens are only cool if you can use them effectively. Not the case here.

Full flex is inbound (supposedly). If not then it is dip pens from here.

You have the advantage of me, Ptero, you are an artist. I have no skill in art. Having used a number of weird nibs over the last couple of years I have learned that I do not possess the aptitude to use anything other than pointed nibs to be properly legible.

EoC, I feel honored that you consider me as an artist.
But believe me, your writing is excellent.

I started drawing 3-4 years ago about 2 years after my humble attempt to improve my horrible writing.
You might remember my first drawing attempts I´ve posted on the (evil) other side in the “Don´t just tell us....” thread.

You might also remember my story, that I was forced to write with the wrong (right) hand (as left handed guy) in school and that I hated writing and that my writing was so bad that almost nobody could read it (including myself).
I suffered from that decades and hated handwriting deeply.

2012 I started after decades an last attempt to improve my writing, and was more than astonished how people perceived my scribbling when I jumped over my shadow and posted something the first time.

May I post a link (to the other evil side) to a post of mine where I told my story once:

Close, but I'm not after an oblique, just a fine or extra fine (with a little spring in the step if possible).

Well, I'm not having any luck with this. There's been one offer to exchange the nib but it would cost me money too. Considering that people have posted in this thread that the vintage BB is a bit unusual I'd have thought that at the very least an exchange would cost me nothing, as I would be giving a desirable nib for a common nib.

    Bit disappointing.

That is strange they wanted to charge you for an exchange. Have you heard anything from Rick Propas?
I would list the pen on this forum and give it time. Having bought and sold several of these pens, I would happily help you figure out an appropriate price.
