    Default On the burner...

This subforum is waaaay too slow. So, I just thought I'd put a couple pics up of my latest project - a series of walnut cigar pens, all destined for a cool hand-rubbed urushi finish. The final result is months away, but I am impatient, and like to share what I'm working on, so here they are:

The cap and barrels are obviously all of walnut, and once the urushi lacquer is done, the grain should line up. The cap threading, the barrel threaded tenon and the nib section are all out of black ebonite, all in matte finish to make the urushi adhere better.

Of course, unfinished wood pens tend not to look like much, but in some ways, that's the point. I will post the final results when they are done, and we can see a 'before and after' comparison.

    Thanks for looking.

Doc. Half my wish list are pens you have created. Now I have ANOTHER pen to add to it!! I don't even need to see the end product. You had me at "hand rubbed urushi". The pics were pretty cool too though.

Hi Ken, Who is doing the urushi?
The urushi finish will be done by Ernest Shin of Hakumin Urushi Kobo. I will not be selling these.

    Thanks very much!

I will most definitely update as I am able. The next update will be some time, however...

    Cheers,

    Thanks, Azizah!

I am pretty excited about these, as Ernest Shin will be working a different urushi technique (suri-urushi) on these compared to what we usually see. I am very much looking forward to seeing the result.

    Looking great Ken!

Man I would love a wooden urushi pen one day. Can't wait to see results!

Well - this group, in any case. This was a bit of an exploration of a new technique. If all goes well, we may do more.

Uhm yeah, much like GourmetPens said, I have several of your pens on my wishlist already. Can't narrow the field down to one and now you put another one to drool over up. Unfair! Can't wait to see future photos as these pens continue along in the process.

Even the unfinished wood is lovely. How does olive wood work for pens?

I make my own nib sections, but I buy screw-in nib units to fit into them, made by JoWo of Germany.

    Thank you!

Olive wood work just fine Ahem. Sorry. Yes, olive is used often for pens. I have a few pieces of it, and it is one of the many woods I plan to use for making some 'Classic Wood' pens like the ebony one I posted in another thread

    Cheers,

    Ken
