Default Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Olivine ink of the Year 2018

Today I'm reviewing Pelikan Edelstein Olivine ink - Pelikan Edelstein Ink of the Year 2018

    P.E.Olivine_0005b.jpg

Pelikan Edelstein Olivine is a dark green dye based ink, that leans quite blue. It could be used as a “standard daily green ink.” I agree with other reviewers when they say it isn't necessarily the Olivine shade we were expecting, and I wish it had been less blue and more yellow, but as it is, it's still a very nice ink to use. I find all of the Edelstein inks I've tried to be very nicely lubricated inks that flow very well across the page. I had no flow problems with Olivine. No difficult starts or skips.

I found it flowed very well in the pens I used it with and I saw plenty of shading particularly with broader nibs. It looked more saturated with my Pelikan Go! B nib. Lubrication was good enough, and it felt smooth writing across some of the papers I used.

    • Flow Rate: Very good. A little slow to dry.
    • Lubrication: Good.
    • Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.
    • Start-up: Immediate.
    • Saturation: A saturated ink.
    • Shading Potential: Some shading seen.
    • Sheen: None seen.
    • Show-Through:
      • Apica paper
      • Tomoe River 52gsm
      • Silvine lined pad
      • Oxford lined pad
      • Field Notes
      • Royal recycled
      • Hobonichi Techo

    • Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Not seen.
    • Nib Creep / “Crud”: Not seen, even after over 1 week in the pen
    • Staining (pen): Not seen after several days in the pen - easy clean-up with water.
    • Staining (hands): Clean-up needs at least 2 washes with bar soap.
    • Clogging: Not seen. Seems unlikely.
    • Water resistance: Not sold as waterproof and has little water resistance.
    • Availability: Available in 50ml glass bottles from many outlets.

I had high hopes for this ink, colour just isn't for me. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the review. I haven't ventured into verdant hues yet but when I do I will have to sample this. I rather like the color.

I just got a bottle of this over the weekend. I'm very much loving the subtle shading--olive into black--but I've found it to be achingly dry. Not in a "flow" sense, but rather in a "lubrication" sense. My M-nibbed M120 (green & black, so of course I inked it with Olivine!), which normally glides across the page with most inks, felt like I was dragging it across the page against its will.

Actually--other than color, obviously--this ink mirrors Edelstein Topaz in just about every respect. At least in my limited, four-day experience with it. I'm going to give it a go in a B-nibbed Sailor tonight.

    Thanks for the review.

I am surprised at the amount of show through. Water resistance was not good either. I had high hopes for this ink as well. I do like the color though. Great review Chrissy!

I didn't find it dry when I wrote my original review page, as it flowed well and glided across that paper smoothly enough, but afterwards, when I wrote on the sample papers, I also thought it felt less lubricated than it had when the pen was first filled. I know what you mean.

You're welcome. I was also surprised at the amount of show through on some of my alternative papers.

Interestingly (or perplexingly) when used in my B-nibbed Sailor it is as lubricated-feeling as you described in your review. That's not by any means a dry nib, but it's far dryer than the M120 I was using it in before. Perplexing indeed. But OMG does it look good coming out of that Sailor!
