    Default Hello again

    Man, this stump is comfortable...

Right. Hello again. I signed up a couple of weeks ago with the user name calamum. A forum member kindly queried me
about my choice of the accusative case, and I realized I had made a error. Calamus would have been the better choice.
(Both mean "pen" in Latin.) I have therefore re-invented myself, as it were, and am no longer using the older name. I
suppose you could call me "cal."

I have so far found the members of this forum generally friendly and helpful. Thank you all.

Kickero it is. It weirded me out when I learned how to pronounce Cicero and Veni, vidi, vici.

Yep, the fellow spoke classical Latin, so a hard "c" sound.

Ooops. I'd completely forgotten that I said that I supposed that people could call me cal (calamum or calamus), and started wondering why people were calling me Cal! (My uncle's name, by the way). Duh. I thought it was because I'm living in California, so when I saw you were in Colorado, I said "Hi Col!" Meanwhile, you probably thought I was a nut job spouting non sequitars! So what I meant to say was, "Hi countrydirt!"

    Thank you very much.

I've been told that when people who've studied Latin enter a seminary to study to become priests, they discover they have to completely relearn Latin. Apparently ecclesiastical Latin is a completely different beast.

Which for some reason reminds of of a post on a different thread on a different forum. It had scans of funny wrong answers to tests in school. One scan was of a short essay question that asked the student to list some accomplishments of the ancient Romans. He could only come up with one: "Learning to speak Latin."

It's the pronunciation, in the main, and some rare noun declensions. Having studied only classical pronunciation, my current prof, who teaches in a seminary, chides me on sounding like a barking centurion!

The thing I like best about Latin is that we get to practice sentences like "Prepare the catapults!" instead of "Where is the bathroom, please?"
