At the risk of oversharing, here is some context as to why I might have been writing the above post with one of my fountain pens.

    This guy.

In April of 2004, this little guy came into our lives. Just barely a week ago he passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly. In all my years, from boy to man, I have never bonded with a companion so completely.

Dr. Cricket arrived at a chaotic time and immediately brought peace and comfort to us. As he grew into a big, handsome cat, he remained a constant, from first greeting in the morning to the last moments of the eve. A love this strong demands more than fourteen years to experience, but that is what we were given. The hole in our lives is deep and wide, yet the joy he furnished was of such magnitude that it will surely, eventually temper the sorrow.

Until that moment transpires, we'll remember him with a fondness beyond measure. A more pure and decent spirit will not come our way again.

and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter."

    Sorry Jon for your loss.

    The poem is quite emotive.
    "Love is the final fight."

Jon I now understand your poem, and know exactly how you're feeling. It's a really sad time, and I'm very sorry for your loss. Although you'll never forget him, the passage of time will begin to heal the intense pain that you're feeling at the moment.

I sometimes take a moment to read this well known poem, and think about my beautiful Maine Coon who left us shortly after we came home from Florida a few years ago:

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

    Mary Elizabeth Frye

    Been there, most saddening.

But... there were 14 years of joy! That's got to be celebrated.

I am convinced they must have souls, and that they are still with us in a way.
