Does ink evaporate?

It's been humid lately and I filled a pen and didn't use it much since I have a few pens inked up. I noticed that it didn't have any ink. I checked for leaks and there were none. The only explanation I have is that the ink evaporated.

Sure it does.

The evaporation rate depends on the pen, some have a higher, some a lower rate (until it completely dries out some time )

You can observe that the ink over time will get darker, and might also change itˋs behavior.

In my experience e.g. Pelikan pens (piston fillers) are very tight and have a low evaporation rate.
These pens can normally keep their ink for months.

Other pens show even after a week or two a noticeable difference.

For 1+ mL of ink to evaporate would take quite a while in such a semi sealed enironment, though.

Ink does indeed evaporate, since it’s water based ink.

It depends on the filling system and the cap. A lever-filler with old latex sac and cap with breather holes will be different than a modern piston-filler with cap having a tight seal.

It does indeed evaporate. You surprised me when you said all the ink was gone though. Maybe you didn't cap it all the way? There is such as a thing as too tight of course, never do that. Cracks would be way worse than evaporated ink. I usually change out ink within 2-3 weeks. Some pens might have ink for a month though. Certain inks I will only keep in a pen for a week. I have 9 pens inked up right now, and that is too many for this time of the year. Normally I should keep only 7-8 inked up. That would be a good thread right there.
