    Next installment:

Mother of pearl from the 1950s

And just to caption (left to right) 140, 400 (note the very early thin double cap bands), matching 450 (with matching bands), 500 (and I have subsequently added the matching 550 pencil, not shown), 400N and 450 pencil.

Gotta admit that I am pretty proud of this collection.

You're really kiddin' now, aren't you? This is right up there with AltecGreen's vintage italians.
Question: that 500, is that what they call the seagrass-green?

The 500 is mother-of-pearl. You can see the seagrass on my website and I do, actually have one available, but not yet up on the site.

Me, too; but I doubt seriously that we will see that celluloid again. Let's hope I'm wrong.

    Hi Rick,

Amazing pens!! Congrats, you really have a great collection!!!

One doubt: I have never seen before the Pelikan 100 Red cap and short tartoise cap top in any catalogue, price list or even another picture of such a pen. Are you sure is not an Frankenpen? but it looks great!!

    Best regards

Vasco, it's a curious pen, to be sure. But it came to me out of the wild, so if it is a marriage it almost surely was done early on, either out of the factory or in the original retailers. Impossible to know.

This is OT but just want to say hi to both you (Vasco, from Pentrace?) and Rick! Been very busy lately but hope to be able to get back up to date soon

Amazing collection Rick, would really like to have a Tortoise 100/101 but right now I'm focusing on more practical (for my hand) pens... go M800!

Hey, Dennis! Happy to see you here. Think about a 100 or 101N--thicker and longer and more durable than the 100/101.

    Tandaina -

You mentioned a 200 in your list, but that you had never seen one. I have one that I lucked into in the 90's, but I don't remember where I got it, and I've never seen another. Wonderful writer, even has a little flex.2013-06-17 09.11.49.jpg

I found one of these on eBay and snapped it up. Mine has a stiff nib, but quite nice still. And it is a beautiful pen. Hard to see in your picture but hte top of the cap is longer and more round than modern Pelikans or any of my other oldies, guess I should post pictures, huh?

Like you, I've become fascinated by Pelikan tortoises, especially brown ones, and I've been drooling over the pictures from Rick Propas's collection. I'll post another picture showing the top, which is rounder than modern Pelikans, and I think the steel nibs from that era are not as stiff as the modern ones. Mine has actually softened over the years (probably like my brain). In fact I have a 120 Merz & Krell that I bought as a student in the 1970's with a nib that has amazing flex; the gold plating is almost gone but it's still a great writer. It cost $12 new!

My M200 torti came with a gold nib, no clue if that was original to the pen, but that's what it came to me with.

As far as I know (and I'm no expert), the 200's originally came with gold-plated steel nibs. But one of the joys of Pelikans is how easy it is to swap out nibs, so I've never been too concerned about what's original. A few years ago Levenger was selling a modern 200 demonstrator with a gold nib. Maybe that's a 205, but I'm just guessing. I bought a 400nn a while back, and when I unscrewed the nib to clean it, the nib collar had cracked, apparently a not uncommon occurrence. Richards's Pens has a fix: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref/pendoctor/22.htm, but I was able to find a 140 nib on Ebay, which fit perfectly.

Got one or two more for the list: 100Nf (a desk pen). They show up most often in green but I have on reserve a tortoise. These may have come as both 100N and 101N gotta do some research Sadly I shall probably have to wait until November to get it unless . . .

So I know there was a Pelikan 500 tortoise with rolled gold cap and piston know... Was there a stipped tortoise with a 400NN piston knob (brown) and a rolled gold cap? Or is that a frankenpen? Not solid tortoise like Rick posted earlier, but stripped like the 400NN but with rolled gold cap?

    Hi Tandaina,

Itīs a not a Frankenpen. This is, as far as I know, the diferent variation that Pelikan 400NN had ( source :http://www.ruettinger-web.de/e-pelikan-modell-400.html)
