I read the original FPN post mentioned above before any of the comments and didn’t think anything of it. I noticed the next day the thread was locked and was surprised. I can’t believe how quickly the thread degenerated. Generally civility rules the day on FP related forums and it makes me sad when things fall apart.
Sometimes it’s more important to apologize and admit mistake than to dig in and defend. I remember once commenting on a story (not pen related) and I chose my words very poorly. Many people quickly got angry at my comment and attacked me. I didn’t want to make the situation worse so I apologized for the misunderstanding, assured everyone I meant no offense, and didn’t try to clarify what I said. The conflict quickly deescalafed and everyone moved on.
I have no problem with FPN moderators stepping in when things start spiraling out of control. Sometimes that’s all it takes for people to take a deep breath and disengage from a conflict. This hobby should be enjoyable; leave the anger and insults for other topics (unless we’re talking about Sailor’s squatty bottles, those things are awful).

My main problem with the pen community (particularly on FPN) is how hoidi toity it is and how everyone thinks they are such a lord. I feel like I am stuck in some stupid-ass bourgeois Victorian period drama.

Note that I am not endorsing the namecalling (though personally it wouldn't bother me all that much. I have a pair of big boy pants around here someplace I can put on).

I am however, all for dropping the faux British horse and buggy bullshit & pretention that pervades the pen community.

Anyone who has had the misfortune to have followed any of my posts or threads may have noticed that, while I may (and indeed do) indulge in some industrial grade whinging , I rarely use rough language. It takes some serious ass-hattery on the part of others to prompt me to being profane.

The unwisdom of bringing their noxious nastiness over here is distressing. Nothing could be gained by it.

There's an old chestnut you may want to take to heart: Leave sleeping dogs lie.

By the way, to bring a little harmless amusement: Brilliant Bills' 'sleeping dogs' are different in French. It's one of the things that most amuses me about French, how often things are almost the same but get a little twist....

Hey now. Those are some of my favo(u)rite bottles.

Both threads have been largely unedifying. The difference is the OP over on FPN started with a different direction in mind, even if he ended up steering to the same place.

As noted before, I am not usually coarse in my writing. Neither in spoken language. However, there is only so much up with which I shall put (as Winston would say), before there comes a desire to be more forthright.

Why did I post the link? Perhaps it was precisely because threads like that don't happen over there that often. Kind of made me sit up and go ooh! Nothing more sinister than that really.

The problem is not necessarily the vulgarity, but the fact that it is done so poorly and ends up validating the viewpoint it intends to attack.

I think we can survive a little vulgarity now and again. There are worse things happening in the world. Sometimes a few obscenities clear the air.

And the issue of intentionally violating the very rules you agreed to obey when registering at the forum still has not been addressed. Having more than one login is a violation of forum rules. Such behavior can sometimes be excused for those still too immature to understand what is right or wrong but should not be accepted among adults.

    I say dear Calamus,

Must we really go so "Bow tie, top hat, pipe and monocle" on this pen forum now? Surely a generally decent lad can endulge in a little vulgarity now and again. One is certainly not entirely shocked to hear the occasional inelegance on the various internet fora nowadays.

    Sincerely,

Oh I get it. If I find vulgarity distasteful, there's something wrong with me. Good to know.

The rule states that a member cannot have more than one account. This rule has not been broken.

I'd agree with you, if not for the fact that thread is f'ing hilarious and sums up FPN so well...
pretentious, prissy, and pathetic prudes, with misplaced aspirations and delusions of grandeur, never mind the total lack of perspective or sense of proportion (and humour).
