I think that usually turns out to be an ink that hangs in the converter for some reason, such as surface tension, rather than dryness of the ink. Does your converter have something inside it to break any surface tension the ink may have? A spring or a ball for example?

Exactly what happened with mine and what I had mused during my writing sample / review. For some reason I didn't even think about adding an agitator.

An agitator. Yes that's the word I didn't mention.

The surface tension is strong with this one.

It doesn't cling to container sides and almost kind of bloops around in the ink window of my Balance as if it were a solid.

The same attribute appeared on the underside of the 14k nib of my dip pen.

Fred, thank you for the post card. I must admit that I was a bit wide-eyed when you posted here that you tested the ink on a 70 year old post card. I was rather awestruck to find it in the mailbox last night . Did you snap a photo of the writing prior to mailing it? I forgot to snap a photo last night, but I was going to load it up and let you compare to see if it's darkened in the week the USPS has been hauling it around.

I've written Mystery Ink No. 21 on other old linen-style postcards similar to that one, and until they were mailed, the ink did not darken (at least not to any degree that I noticed, unlike on modern paper).

Was starting to wonder...I'd like to hear some guesses...I have no idea since I am not too much of an ink hoarder and this is the first IG ink I've ever used.

My guess is Platinum Cassis Black. It seems plausible based on hue and shade. I'll be on tenterhooks awaiting the reveal!

Cassis Black is my guess too. I'll try to post pictures and thoughts later this afternoon.

Cassis Black was my first guess too. However since it is hard to write on some paper, I'm not so sure. I have tried the Forest Green one, and it didn't have trouble writing on any paper, if memory serves me correctly on that. I have saved some of the ink in my pen, so I can write the correct name of the ink on the sheets I've written.

You were all on the right street, and might have even stopped at the right building, but you buzzed the wrong apartment. Mystery Ink #21 is indeed made by Platinum, but it is not Cassis Black. MI #21 is Platinum Lavender Black.

Wow, thanks for telling us. I am definitely going to try this in another pen then. I have 11 pens inked up now. I have a friend who went to the pen show, and he got me some ink to try out. I am super excited about that. I wish they had samples at the show, now that would be cool. I did want to eventually try all of the Platinum Classic line. So far I have tried 2. (Lavender Black and Forest Green Black) I have to get the amount of pens inked up down to at least 8-9 though. 11 is just too many for me right now.

Sorry for being so slow to post my observations…

My ink vial didn't perfectly survive the USPS but there was enough ink to fill most of a converter. The writing samples in the photos below were done with a Graf von Faber Castell Intuition, which has a little wetter than average nib. By the time I finished with these basic writing samples there wasn't much ink left in the converter, so I couldn't test the mystery ink over a prolonged period of time. This was exacerbated by the Intuition's cap, which isn't very airtight, so some ink evaporated before I could really use the pen (the last few weeks were really busy with few writing opportunities). I planned on writing a little more over the weekend but the converter had dried out.

Overall, I enjoyed the ink and the color reminds me a little of MB Exupery, albeit a little lighter and with more shading. This is the second Platinum XXX Black ink I've used, the first being Citrus Black. Citrus Black is really dry so I only use it with my really wet nibs. This ink (Lavender Blank) was well behaved, with no feathering or other issues across a variety of papers. It was a little on the dry side, so if I were to use this ink in the future I'd avoid dryer nibs.

I didn't really test the ink's waterproofness, but it did smear when I ran a licked finger over the writing. This is pretty typical with colored IG inks and I suspect the underlying gray/black of the IG would be permanent.

I don't have any photography or editing skills, so my pictures don't do a great job accurately reflecting the ink. I'd say my writing samples are most similar to Scooby's.

Overall, I enjoyed the ink but nothing about it really stood out. I probably wouldn't buy a bottle, especially since I already have MB Exupery.

Thanks again to Scooby for providing the sample.

After two fills of MI No. 21 in my early BCHR Sheaffer C3 lever-filler, it was an easy clean and flush, with no red residue to contend with.

Another observation: MI #21 has not dried out on the nib of my Balance Jr. and starts up effortlessly whenever I go to use it despite sitting for up to a week.

I finally ran out of MI #21 in my W-E Gold Seal. Never any hard starts to contend with, even with the pen sitting for several days without use. As far as I can tell it cleaned up easily. A few flushes and no more red ink. Definitely enjoyed the ink until the end. Will definitely use more of it.
