Default Oh gosh no, another hobby on the horizon?

Just hopping in to see what the FP community is like. I was recently handed a couple of Dupontes and I have no idea if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

It's a very good thing. I don't know if you are in the city, but your next stop might be Fountain Pen Hospital, 10 Warren Street, New York, NY 10007. Check opening hours before you go.

The community itself is very good, the brand, or both? X3

Unfortunately, I'm way up in CNY, but I should see if there are any places up here that work with FPs.

I need to figure out how to identify authentic pens vs fake ones before I start trading or buying. Are there tutorials you'd recommend for that sort of thing?

ST Dupont is a very good marque and as a general rule a company that pays as much attention to even the most mundane of features as to the most prominent.

Unfortunately it is also one of the most often faked brands. I've even been fooled when it comes to ST Dupont. Today it is nearly impossible to authenticate many pens based on pictures so the best suggestion is to really know the product and buy the seller as much as the object.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell.

There was this place in Herkimer, near Utica, but no-one ever came to unlock the door.

I loved in Utica for a bit back in the early 2000s. The place you posted looks so quintessentially CNY, haha. I wonder if I should give them a ring tomorrow and see what happens (if they still exists that is).

I've sent an email over to the Fountain Pen Hospital. I gave them a link to photos of my pens (http://imgur.com/a/1X79FGx), and asked them for more information, but after reading @jar's response, I'm unsure how/if they'll respond.

Really, what makes me trepidatious about getting into this hobby, is that I'll end up trading or saving up for a pen, just to get taken advantage of. Is there anything I should read that will be a good primer before going I start buying? I used to professionally grade Magic the Gathering cards, so I've read scads of detailed tutorials for detecting fakes. I'd appreciate knowing which sources you guys trust so I can start there.

Are you talking about the Tibaldi?

    Okay, the images finally loaded.

There are two seeming ST Dupont pens; one black and one white.

Unfortunately neither one is a model I am familiar with or even remember seeing. The white one is somewhat like the ST Dupont Neo-Classique but the black one is a total mystery to me.

    A Neo-Classique:

ST Dupont has always been pretty easy to deal with directly in my experience and an email to the US Distributor should get a quick response.

If you buy your pens from a reputable dealer, you will have no problems. Otherwise, anything can happen.

Yeah, but my Tibaldi's book doesn't look the same as what I see in pictures. So I'm not sure if it's authentic or not.

I'll send a quick note over to Dupont and see if they can give me any advice. Thanks for the tip!

The white pen almost looks like a mashup of the Omas Tokyo fountain pens, the ST Dupont New-Classique and the Montegrappa first version Espressione.

I don’t live in NY state but I do know of a ROVING NY state pen club that holds meetings in different places. Check them out:

    http://gnypig.club

Also, just googling “pen club list” should find you multiple lists; check ALL of the lists you can find, as none of them is likely to have all the clubs no matter how hard they try;, because I have seen at least four or five start up in the last two years, including mine (IowaPen), GNYPIG and clubs in Hawaii (HIPPO), New Orleans LA, and Austin TX I think, I am starting to lose track! I kind of notice new clubs because I started ours and have offered advice to several of the ones I mention. Many are on Facebook, too.

There is also a section of these boards for clubs and shows where I try to remember to announce our meetings, but often forget...speaking of which....off to announce our Oct. meeting while I am thinking of it.

Welcome - I wish you luck with the pens. The chances of you being taken advantage of will reduce dramatically now that you have joined! There are so many knowledgeable people here to ask for advice.
You came to a good place and I am glad that you are here.

Yeah, the avatar was by another artist, haha.
