I think you are on the right track: the only thing that makes sense to me is that the chasing pattern is a very rare variant. It is hard to tell, due to the condition, but some of the Wahl patterns (IIRC) involved two different gold platings or alloys, deposited and then some of it removed. This could also be at play. At those numbers for what - in common form - are somewhat common pens, I have to think it is either a rara avis or a douche with deep pockets who wanted this particular gold pen no matter what.

Examining the bids, it looks like the latter. Someone who recognized the value or wanted it for a collection and bid high. Losing bidder appeared to try a snipe, but sniped too low.

I found the pattern here. Lakeside with enamel in the pattern. No word on rarity or value, Those would be interesting to learn.

... you found my pen (or as close as I've ever seen anyone figure out what "model" I have just been calling it a Wahl 2 for the longest time).

edit: Best I can tell mine is probably a 421, not quite sure on the last number, but the first number is clearly for length, mine being exactly 4-3/8" capped like all the 4## on his page, second number is clearly the nib size, 2 on mine, the last one is possibly the pattern number (only see 1 on the 3 digit check/unique patterns he shows). Don't know about the D, AW, etc sufffixes.

I have a Colonnade ringtop...it's a pretty pen. It should go back into my rotation.
