Ok so i won a 51 signet set for really nothing, most likely because of the HUGE engraving on the barrel.

Thoe barrels have to go, obviously. I am considering replacing them with demonstrator barrels from Kullock. I think this would make fora fairly attractive set. Your thoughts?

Is that engraved or printed? If printed, there are various solvents you could try.

Is it just one barrel or both?

What a shame. They would have been really nice pens but for that engraving. I bet you could get the black out and that would make it less noticeable, but it's still a pretty deep hole to fill.

Nah, I'll just swap out the barrels for demonstrators.

If the engraving is so offensive, why buy the pens?

Barrels are cheap enough and they seem to be readily available on ebay.

Indeed, that's the play. I'm going to wait until they arrive before i make any solid decisions though.

Just the pen to use when you need prompting to get on with a job. viz:

"Sigh, don't wanna have to write to Great Uncle Augustus. Where's the right pen to goad me into action?"

In short, if it was me I'd retain the engraving and enjoy thinking about how many provoking jokes Mr, Mrs or Ms L Goad used to endure.

Unless, of course, it's a GOAD pen - Greatest Of All Days.

I entertained adding an E to the front of the engraving. El Goad..poke poke poke.

Let's approach this a different way. We've had a few threads on this forum about the kind of colleagues who grab your FP to jot something down, or pinch pens off your desk... one of the most annoying dangers of modern fountain pen fanlife.

Mr Goad evidently had run the gauntlet of fountain pen thievery. Perhaps his colleagues were early ballpoint users and broke one of his nibs by pressing too hard, or lost the cap of his much loved Duofold. This time, he said as he plonked down his money for a brand new 51 set, this time it will be different....

Anyway, I rather like those barrels, so if you're getting rid of them, I'll take them off you!

I'm a fan of personalisations. I think they add someting to the pen. Not quite history unless you can identify the previous owner, but character anyway.

There is reasonable personalisation, and then there is PERSONALISATION like L.GOAD. Sadly, I could never own these pens with that on there.

Oh, be sure to do a search on Mr. or Ms. L. Goad. You never know what will turn up. I had a Waterman No. 7 blue nib that was engraved with a name that turned out to be a famous magazine illustrator. Then there was the black and red hard rubber Waterman 55 engraved with a name that turned out to be a prominent executive of Florida department store that went by his name. Researching your pens' provenance can be fun.

Chrissy, good thing I just finished my coffee, otherwise I'd be cleaning up my laptop screen now.

I am in the camp of those who think this is a cool personalization. It is really kind of funny. Then, again, I have found that most people never see the humor I see in things. Especially . . .
