Default Engraving of Serial Number And Font on 149

This is the first I have had in hand with a serial but I thought the font was different as was the engraving. Did the font of the engraving change over time?

Don't think they ever changed the font. Have you tried googling the full serial number to see if what you have shows up on known counterfeit numbers used?

    According to this site :

The font of the serial number has changed at least once; the early ons (such as my 1991 MB146) is block-lettered, while current ones use a font that resembles the computer-readable numbers in a personal check. I am not sure when the switch occurred.
Neither of which is going to look like that style of courier-ish style

The closest font I've found to the use of the 1 and other numbers shown there was off a fake shown here : http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/fo...ke-or-genuine/

The thing is, it does have a piston with brass threads. Everything else points to it being good but this engraving makes me wonder. I can't see to find the serial database I have seen people mention.

Nor can I (most google searches takes you to a phishing site trying to get you to install software). But I haven't seen anything other than block lettering or the machine OCR style lettering for MB serials. And I've seen the nib off yours, not something I would consider a fake at a glance.

The pen in question is another one that someone I have been talking to about a trade. He wanted a different size nib and instead of a nib swap we just decided to possibly just swap pens. This engraving is on his pen. I know mine is fine. But everything else on his pen checks out, too. Just the engraving is odd. The nib and everything is beautiful.

Tried googling the whole serial number?

I forgot to mention he did have the pen serviced by Montblanc and has that paperwork.

Not the slightest possibility that it's a fake then.

The font possibly looks slightly unusual, but from your description the pen sounds like it's completely authentic.

I'm sure I've seen that type of figure 8 on a serial number before.

Any idea on when they switched over to the OCR style font? (2000+ maybe?) also been trying to find a visual example of the "block lettering" that one link spoke of.

I wondered if it was a font they experimented with and didn't like so they didn't use it much.

I don't know when they switched, but at the same time I think they changed the format of numbers and letters.

Why would an 'experiment' make it out into production though?

I don't see why not. Test runs go out now and then in various brands. Happened a lot more in the vintage era. Look at all the Sheaffer Balances and their short run changes, white feeds, etc.

Well, the owner of the pen showed me the letter and invoice from MB with the matching serial number. So, that was the final piece of proof I wanted
I sent pictures of the engraving to MB as well to see if they could shed some light on the subject.

I’d be interested in hearing what they have to say.

I would bet that in the event they reply, they say it's normal.

Probably. Just not a font or engraving technique I have seen on their pens as of yet.

It may change a little, don't worry. These are subtle changes that the average person will not even notice. Changes can only be seen in a detailed comparison with the new original. I also ordered an engraving. It was on a silver ring. I decided to write 2222 there. Don't ask me, I'm not crazy. It's just that this number has a very cool hidden meaning that many do not know about. If you want to read about it, then I advise you to visit https://www.sunsigns.org/angel-number-2222-meaning/. Due to the rarity of using this number, the meaning that is embedded in it is understood by only a few, and I understand how valuable my ring is in such conditions.

This was a 2 year old thread so I assume OP is/was happy with his pen.
