Default Does anyone remember Scripto fountain pens?

I have a vague recollection of owning one or two Scripto fountain pens during the 1950s. I seem to recall that they worked okay most of the time, but I was never entirely happy with them. I'm not sure if that's because at the tender age of 8 I was already lusting after a Sheaffer Snorkel, and hence dissatisfied with a lesser instrument, or if it really was a crummy pen. I had one pen that was a nightmare -- scratchy nib, hard starts, skipping, then blobbing... I think it MAY have been a Scripto, but I'm just not sure. There doesn't seem to be a big demand for them; I see them cheap as dirt on eBay. Is the Scripto going to do an Esterbrook price jump when a critical mass of fountain pen afficiandos discover them, or are they just dogs that are going to go unloved forever?

Yep I remember them as well. They 'wrote' as in putting in a line on the paper & that was about it. Quality varied from pen to pen. You are closer to the mark with the canine estimate in my opinion.

I've had a few of them in recent times. I fear they live in a kennel and go for a walk on a lead.

It's reassuring to get feedback suggesting that my memory hasn't failed completely yet!

Apparently they were big at one time:

I have a small collection of these wonderful pens, in many colors and iterations. The retread product Sheaffer churned out a few years ago was merely okay by comparison.

Great ink testers and travel pens.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

I've seen a couple of people in other forums speak highly of them too. Interesting. Must be one of those YMMV things. They're so cheap, I may pick up a couple and see if I get lucky!

I imagine the worst examples were binned over the years leaving mostly the good ones?

I have one of these pens now, and it has what appears to be an original rubber gray sac. Works perfectly.

Sometimes, when I come across a pen like this, I wonder why I bothered collecting all these pens. This pen is just like one that the elementary school supplied in fifth grade. Only the barrel color differs. Same gray rubber sac. Unbelievable

I have a recollection of what I recall as Scripto pens sold in a blister pack. A pen, either clear or transparent red blue or green with something like 12 cartridges for $4.49 (early '60's)......I remember the ones that I had actually did work, most of the time. I happily replaced them years later and discovered that fountain pens could actually be enjoyable experiences.

I think those early experiences were Scripto brand but that was long ago.

I have to change my mind about the Scripto. I found one with a metal cap and a hooded nib, a cartridge filler. It has a metal insert in the hood, mimicking the Parker 61. The cartridge doesn't look like any modern one so I flushed it and filled it with a syringe. The pen writes perfectly well, no skipping or hard starting.

That said, this is just one example. My husband remembers them from the sixties when they were sold by Woolworth. The ones he knew were squeeze fillers, a bit like an Aerometric. His memory is that they were somewhere below Platignum in quality - and that's saying something! Perhaps the cartridge fillers were an improvement.
