    Default Yard-O-Led Prices and Quality

    Howdy Geeks,

Long story short, I've been using pencils much more these days that my pens and have been scouring through the flea for YOL pencils. Anyone have experiences with them? I'm particularly interested in the vintage ones. I see they offer rolled silver, which i assume goes over brass? Also, does anyone know anything about what Platinine Silver is? Is that just plated?

Just trying to get a feel for the brand and things to look for.

    Thanks!

YOL pencils have uses the same reliable design and lead size for their mechanisms throughout their manufacture. So if you buy a YOL pencil from the 30s, it will have the same mechanics as the current ones.
The name comes from the fact that there is place within the mechanism for storing spare leads individually, each in its own slot. When you add the length of pencil lead in use and storage, you get a yard (26 inches) of lead in the pencil.

The rolled gold and rolled silver are just that - the gold or silver are rolled onto the base so the 2 metals fuse. You will only see signs of wear when someone has abused the pencil or been over zealous in polishing it.

The platinine pencils are made with platinum instead of gold or silver. It has the advantage that it doesn't tarnish the way silver does.

The quality is good and unless the pencil mechanism has been abused, a YOL pencil from the 30s (say) will perform as well as a new one.

If you do get one, I can post a copy of the instruction (destruction?) sheet they came with.

Platinum plated/rolled I assume? Solid platinum would be quite impressive.

Quite, but it doesn't really elucidate any of their past models/materials and how they function vs. modern manufacture.
