    Default Travelling inkwell

I picked up this charming travelling inkwell at the weekend. It made up for the fact that I saw all of five fountain pens, and all were horrible fourth tier modern stuff.

The little bottle inside is glass with a plastic top that says 'Waterman'. The outside is, I think, bakelite, with a screw thread. There is a spring in the bottom, which keeps the glass container in place and ensures it doesn't jiggle around.

It really is the most charming accessory and in very fine condition.

I'd love to see other people's travelling ink accessories and inkwells!

Thank you for reminding me of these Yatates! I once stumbled over them on Russ Stutler's website: https://russellstutler.com/pens/yatate/index.html

Yes. I remember reading this fabulous article while doing some research on calligraphy. It might interest you, that in the Middle East, calligraphic ink (lampblack) comes in form of pellets which in is turned into liquid, by adding water. Then they add strips of silk inside the ink, much like the Japanese added cotton in their Yatate.THough I believe the former do it, to control the amount of ink around the reed they use for writing

Wow! That's really lovely! Especially the swirly engraving, so if you run out of inspiration for flourishes, your inkwell will give you an idea :-)
