Default Platinum 3776 feed stuck in section.

    Hi

I got a used Platinum 3776 from ebay but it had a big gap between the nib and the feed and so it would stop writing after a little while. It seemed to me that the previous owner tried to adjust the nib but didn't properly set the nib and feed back. So I decided to remove the setup and reinsert them properly. But I am not able to remove the feed from the section. After a lot of effort, the nib came out but the feed doesn't budge.
I have tried soaking it in warm water with a little soap, but so far it hasn't worked. While I have dabbled(fairly successfully) till now in tinkering with fountain pens(mostly with cheap chinese pens), I am still quite new to this and really don't want to damage this pen(I like it a lot despite it's problems). Can anyone suggest some other way to loosen the feed or anything else to fix this problem?

    Thanks

Odd that the feed is still stuck even with the nib removed. You could try *carefully* pushing it out from the rear of the section. You’d have to be very careful to apply even pressure so as not to damage the nipple.

I've never had a feed jam on me before but I did buy a 3776 with a broken feed which I'm sure was caused by something similar to your predicament. The feed should pull straight out of the section. You might try grabbing the feed with something cushiony and pulling it out. I was able to do a chemical weld (MEK) to fix the broken feed but also ordered a new one from Luxury Brands (I think). I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction.
    Good luck!

I tried pushing it from the rear but it doesn't budge at all and I don't want to push too hard and damage the feed, especially since the rear of the feed is so narrow.

I have been trying to pull it out by wrapping a rubber material around the feed but no success yet. Would it be a bad idea to immerse the section and feed in oil to lubricate them? Is there any potential for damage to the plastic in the feed or section materials?

I wonder if the previous owner glued it...?

Try soaking in hot water (not boiling hot) - or maybe wait for more experienced pen tinkerers to advise.

But do not force! You don't want to break it.

    I thought exactly the same!
If soaking in hot water fails to work then what I would do is to wrap a wad of kitchen towel around the feed then gently warm the end of the section with a hairdryer. If you haven't done this before, be very careful to not get the heat too close to the section, and don't get it too hot. You're only aiming to make the section expand enough so that the feed will come out when pulled.

To be honest, I would have sent it back to the seller. It looks like he might have done something he shouldn't have done.

Nib knock-out block. If you don't plan on getting one, drill a deep hole through a piece of wood large enough to accommodate the feed but NOT the section. The wood MUST be thicker than the length of the feed. Warm the section, place the feed into the hole, and use a drift or a dowel that just fits into the back end of the section to tap out the feed. The flat end of a bamboo chopstick will work if it is not too thin.

Fred I think the feed will need a hollow rod so as to not damage the nipple.

Nipple? I guess I’m thinking in vintage terms.

Maybe. I have no Platinum pens, but I think Kulprit suggested it was a C/C pen.

I had a vintage 3776 w/ ebonite feed that was really hard to get apart. I could not get that feed out for love or money but the cap had also broke so I sent to Platinum and they must have fixed that too b/c they polished the nib. My modern 3776s with plastic feeds come right out.

Finally managed to remove the feed after trying for two days. Kept it soaked in soapy water for almost a full day and using a hair dryer. Now I have set the nib and feed back in without any gap and it writes smoothly. Thank you for all your advice!
