Default Hello! And I have an ink question!!

    Hi from Ireland!!

    I've got an ink issue.
No problems with the regular colours, but I got a Gold Winsor & Newton Ink, and its just half clumpy and half watery.
It doesnt mix well at all, ive shaken the bottle all day and stirred.
even tried cornstarch as was recommended by someone online for watery ink!

    any ideas?

heres whats its looking like IMG_0527.JPGIMG_0528.jpg

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Yes, it is lumpy and clumpy and not meant to be used in a pen but rather a brush. Winsor & Newton inks should never be used in any fountain pen.

    Hello and welcome to FPGeeks.
It's definitely not an ink for fountain pens, and if you've used cornstarch then that's what made it even thicker and more clumpy. Whatever was in there to make it a free flowing liquid ink has evaporated and it's not going to be useable again.

good to know that its not fountain pen ink, that makes sense. I have a waterbrush thingy, any good with that?

I think you might find it's just too thick and clumpy to use.

I had a R&K Silver ink once which also got clumpy after some time.
My assumption is that it got conterminated one time and then transformed into a gooey clumpy mass.
Neither stirring nor adding water or something else could have changed it.
There was only one option left, I put it into the bin and bought a new one.

Yours look similar to what mine looked like (except that mine was silver and not gold), I fear this will not turn into something good anymore.

As others said, never ever put drawing ink into a fountain pen.
These inks are used with a dip pen or a brush.

    Side note:
The golden and silver inks look amazing when writing with a dip nib.
Especially when they are still wet, the particles inside move arround as it would be alive , looks gorgeous.

ah, so maybe im not completely stupid? ive been using an old style dip fountain pen for it with an italic nib, I didnt fill up any of the modern fountain pens with the ink.
is that what you meant by dip pen?

Diamine have a gold ink, so i'm looking at just getting that instead.

For stump, think about camping and pulling up the end of a log to sit down. To set a spell ... In English there is sit and set, similar words but different usages and meaning, you sit down but you set down a package. Spell once meant an indefinite period of time.

"set a spell" has meaning to set aside your cares and woes for an indefinite period of time.

Yes an old style dip pen with no feed or filling system is a pen that you can use with calligraphy or drawing ink and it doesn't fill like a fountain pen does.
Diamine Razzmatazz is a very good gold ink for fountain pens. I used it on all of my Christmas cards this year and received several good mentions about it from their recipients.

will have to order a nice one!

would there be any paper experts here on the forum? ive been trying to find the thinnest page that doesn't leak ink through to the other side.
guy in the fountain pen shop wasnt much help, he said there was some japanese paper hed heard of once.

at the moment i have a 50/60gsm page and its holding up fairly well, but was just wondering if anyone might know of a good paper for this?
something with a weird coating that would prevent ink going through is what im looking for really

The Japanese paper you heard of once is probably Tomoe River. It's FP friendly, many members use it and there are some sources for it mail order. Try: Amazon, Bureau Direct, Cult Pens, The Journal Shop and maybe some sellers on Etsy. There may be others specifically in Ireland.

One thing you might try, a small trial first, is gum arabic. It is used with watercolors and when I made iron gal ink it was also one of the ingredients. Perhaps use a bit of gum arabic and then thin down with water. It might smooth things out, right now I don't think I would even use it with a brush. Suggested by a retired art teacher. Gum arabic can be found in art supply stores, probably in the watercolor area.
