Default The name's Dave... er, well that's it really.

    Hello.

Hoping to learn much from being here. Don't have much experience with pens (mostly pencils). Currently have a Lamy 2000 (the one with the pull out filling thing) and a Pilot capless.

Thought about trying my hand at a bit of calligraphy, so any suggestions for tools is appreciated.

    cheers,

    Dave

Welcome, Dave, for calligraphy, depending on which script or hand you chose, there are different types of nibs on a fountain pen that you can employ.
I'd suggest reading on different nibs like Italic, Stub, Flex (or flexible) and see a lot of writing samples to build up your familiarity. Enjoy the journey, it's a lot of fun.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a formal student of calligraphy (don't have the patience, nor the discipline), but I love using fountain pens to write (and sketch).

Hi Dave! I'm a Dave too.

I do some calligraphy from time to time, but I'm not a pro. From what I've learned so far, there are two basic types of calligraphy: edged nib and pointed nib. Thus, there are, generally speaking, two basic kinds of calligraphy nibs — edged and pointed. There are also some specialty nibs for certain calligraphic hands that aren't so easily classifiable, but they're more oddball exceptions. Edged-nib styles of calligraphy include Italic, Foundational, and Blackletter (also known as Gothic). The nib is held at an angle, so depending on the direction of the stroke, the line is thicker or thinner. Usually the angle is kept constant, but some hands like Uncial require twisting the pen as you draw some of the letters, and hence are harder to learn.

Pointed nibs are generally flexible, and the tines spread apart as you apply pressure to the nib, and that's what gives you the variation in line weight with that style of calligraphy. The best known pointed nib calligraphic hands are Copperplate (or Engrosser's Script) and Spencerian. Most purists use dip pens for calligraphy, but there are fountain pens that you can do calligraphy with, too, although the inks are different. You'll ruin your fountain pen if you put calligraphy ink in it.

Regarding fountain pen nibs, the edged nibs are usually called stubs or Italic nibs. While some people use the terms interchangeably, there are technical differences between the two. Dip pen flex nibs tend to have more flex than fountain pen flex nibs, but there are some fountain pen flex nibs (sometimes called "wet noodles") that have loads of flex; they tend to be pretty expensive.

There are people on this forum who are much, much better at calligraphy than I am, and who know a lot more about the subject.

I realize I probably sounded like a moron trying to sound like a brainiac. That's because I am a moron, due to not having very many brain cells left that still fire. The pretentious twit part is just a character flaw (nothing to see here, move along).
"But enough about me," as the rock star said to the groupie. "What did you think of my latest album?"

    Oh. Almost forgot.

    "Dave's not here."
