I have just at 230. Been collecting since 1988.

Here is a video well worth the time. Jose "Butch" Dalisay is a professor with a doctorate in English lit. He is a great guy an an online mentor to me. I think he has a rather unique approach to collecting writing instruments and considers his collection as part of his retirement.

Again, well worth the watch. About 6 minutes long.

Exactly the same number of Dalmatians as in the Disney movie...

I just watched the little film about Mr Dalisay's collection. It's lovely - very human, and really expresses the immense pleasure he gets from his pens. Thanks Bisquitlips for the reference!

    Pens I actually care about?

I have 3 fountain pens and 1 ballpoint pen. All four use different colored ink. I want to have at least 5 and at most 7.

One pen for each color: Black, Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Brown, and a nice neon color.

At the end of last year, I picked up my Sailor Pro Gear and started using the vintage fountain pens I inherited. I started looking forward to acquiring more. But the more I use my Pro Gear and my vintage pieces, I don’t think I have any real reason to spend more cash on others, including iconic pens like a MB 149 or Lamy 2K. What I’ve just said is probably sacrilegious in this forum!

I started in the 80s. And I am ashamed to note the exact number, except to say the ones I've sold or given away are in the triple digits.
My other pen is a Montblanc.

And my other blog is a tumblr!

Around 50 FP´s, plus matching mechanical pencils, plus a few more pencils.

A few years back I had more than twice that amount, but I am slowly selling the collection.

I don't count my pens but all I know is all my pen cases are full and my pen roll is too full and now have severl boxes of which some pens came to my door keeping them safely and secure.
So I found them not to be binned but keeping other pen to be collected to have them in easy reach. I know this will never get stopped growing.

Several dozen of pens and why they are so many? Well, every pen is having a diffrent chractor. You have learn them You should be connected to then differently and try differently on different papers and ink. once you get to know them you don't fell as you have so many but so different friends. Yes so many can distract your creativity. I love all my pens and there are some chinese pens I have adapted as Franken pens and they are unbeatable to any pens that are high in prices.

Sounds similar to my experience. I admit that, for me, only one or two pens is truly necessary. And only a few would be practical.

However, I enjoy the different feel and behavior of each.

I try to let my less used or less useful pens go on to homes where maybe they will be enjoyed more often.

Doing so makes room for replacements so I can try out other pens and brands, like the Kaweco that arrived this week, which has a totally different feel to the nib than anything else I've tried. I'm glad I didn't miss out on that experience.

Three regular users. These do almost all the work these days

Three occasional users. By which I mean, I would be quite happy to use them, but am perfectly happy with my favourites at the moment. If at some point in the future, I fancy a change, I'll reach for one of these.

Two I might never use again. If they were the only two fountain pens I had, I'd probably use ballpoints most of the time.

Seven new and unused spares, in case something happens to my favourites. They're only cheapies, but might not be still in production if I need to replace them in the future. Of my three favourites, I have two spares for one, and five spares for the other.

I don’t know and I’m afraid to find out.

But this thread has sparked my curiosity, so a cursory count of the pens currently on my desk here at work comes out to be 30. That does not count the pens at home, and I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to how many that would be.

Happily, I have shed about 20-25 pens in the last year, though I’m inclined to reduce my collection even more severely in the coming year. I think fondly upon the notion I once possessed of owning just one really nice pen. The idea of my descendants someday proudly wielding one of my pens (the way I do with my great-grandfather’s pen) is somewhat watered-down when said pen is one of potentially dozens. I’ve gone (and continue to go) through the same thing with wristwatches.

So if anyone is looking for some pens or wristwatches....
