    Default Marbled Paper

Does anyone marble paper? I'm trying my hand at it and would love to hear from anyone else who's into it. I'm particularly trying to learn how to get the black to show up and other dark and vibrant colors. Most of my attempts are on the pastel side right now.

I read about marble paper recently. And I saw them on sale here. I'm not sure what it is used for? Can you expand on that?

It can be used to wrap smallgifts, or for art projects - such as making greeting cards, things like that. I keep a supply of different papers I like that I buy from the scrapbooking section at Michaels. They come in handy for a lot of things.

I've been marbling on some vintage, 13 lb., 100% cotton, watermarked paper so I'm writing letters on the unmarbled side and then folding the letters so you see marbled paper when you open the envelope. It's not a perfect set-up on such light-weight paper but it's fun. I just tested writing on the marbled side of the paper also and it seems to work as long as the ink is darker than the marbling...but a letter would be hard to read. I will also use the marbled sheets for making envelopes, craft projects, wrapping gifts, and the like.

Your link is for a different sort of marbling which looks fun too! (So thanks!!) I'm using thin acrylic paints that are floated in a "size" --- so far I've used cornstarch and shaving cream but I just got carrageenan which is what grown-ups use... I just haven't tried it yet because I also had to order a blender.

Thanks for expelling in detail, though I got lost a bit somewhere between the shaving cream and the blender

I remember doing these at school - and subsequently as an art project. I must dig some supplies out - you've just reminded me how nice they are!

That last one is absolutely beautiful - I'd love a pen in those colours

I agree about finding a pen in those colors!! Marbling can be done with young children often using shaving cream as the "size" (the stuff you float your ink on.) I tried that.....and HIGHLY recommend finding unscented shaving cream.

I think this one is fabulous and wonder if it might be possible to reproduce something similar using fp inks?

A very diluted suminagashi (paint on water, a Japanese technique) could work for a paper you can write on; Chinese ink made very light grey, and then a surfactant used to create white space between the grey lines/spaces. (Washing up liquid works fine as surfactant.)

Some inks have a tendency for the pigment to sink - others have worked in the past (I think they were drawing inks but I made my experiment a good few years ago).

A good question. With very limited testing, I was not able to use fountain pen ink for Suminagashi marbling -- the ink sank in the water.
