The Tidal streaming service had (still has?) a deal to get four months of their service for $4 total. I opted for their "Hifi" service and and now piping a lot of my favorite music into my good sound system. Great sounds -- makes it sound like Coleman Hawkins is back and standing right here in front of me with that sweet tenor sax.

Maybe this lockdown ain't all bad!

Der Ring des Nibelungen - Richard Wagner. It's actually on a DVD with James Levine conducting at the Met in 1990 with the late Jesse Norman and other operatic superstars. A whirlwind of a ride of ideas and human nature.

The best staging and production since Wagner himself at Bayreuth.

You can see where Tolkien borrowed many of his themes from Wagner.

Today would have been Johann Sebastian Bach's 335th birthday and Franz Joseph Haydn's 288th.
    .
In addition to his outstanding ecclesial compositions, Bach wrote a famous piece for the early "blue movie" industry.

    .
Q: Why couldn't Beethoven find his teacher?
    A: Because he was Haydn!

That's because they stayed in and washed their hands.

My current "Harp Heroine", Amy Turk playing a Lyon & Healy 30 concert harp and using it for hand percussion in her own arrangement of Toto's "Africa". Amazing.

Today would've been Billie Holiday's 105th birthday. Often copied, never matched; incomparable and indomitable. Enjoy!

For those of you whose taste runs to the Classical, today is the 215th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven premiering his 3rd Symphony at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. This video is from the 2012 BBC Proms. Enjoy!

Today is the 293rd anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's premier of his "St. Matthew Passion" at the St. Thomas church in Leipzig. Enjoy!

It is 1.30 AM here and our national radio station is bravely playing the full 8 hours of Max Richter's "Sleep".

Wow that's really an interesting work. I hadn't heard of it until your post.

Earlier I was listening to a Pandora station I created with Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, and Ahmad Jamal to get it started. Sort of going for a 50s/60s vintage relaxing, jazz standards and legends kind of thing.

Today would have been Bessie Smith's 126th birthday. Despite her poor upbringing, uncouth manner, and lack of formal education, she was a major influence on Blues and early Jazz. She may also be one of the few artists Jon Szanto has not worked with!

Today would have been Dusty Springfield's 81st birthday. What a voice!

It would've also been Henry Mancini's 96th birthday.

    And it's Dave Pirner's 56th birthday.

    Enjoy!

Today is Slide Hampton's 88th birthday. I've a friend (The Rev) who was very close to Phil Woods, so I found this song that features both of them. They did a lot more stuff together than this, and I was really disappointed that more of it was not readily apparent on YouTube
    Enjoy!

Jon Szanto, if you played with one or both of these giants, I want to hear all about it!
