Default Hot famous [insert object of desire here]...

No, not more "hot famous..." spam.

There was a discussion about how much heat is enough or too much. This is an example of where just a little heat can be too much.

Using my embossing heat gun to salvage a nib and feed from an altered section, I was startled when the threads simply sizzled and evaporated into smoke before the usual seconds required to release a shellac bond. I wish I had a video. Alas, the brass band under the added threads changed the equation. I have to wonder what material the penmeister used to turn those threads, probably vintage nitrous celluloid. No fear; a second penmeister had already performed a more stable repair on my 1929 long oversize black & pearl Sheaffer Balance, which thankfully was in another room.

So, when when you are thinking about getting involved with the hot (and maybe even famous), be careful.

Wasn't that a famous Cheech and Chong movie? (Sorry, showing my age here. )

Pens are fragile. Even for highly experienced people like you, the unforeseen will occur once in a while. I've been restoring pens as a business for 10 years and as a hobby for much longer but I still break pens. It always feels like a tragedy.

I still find dry heat to be the safest method of disassembly.

I would be devastated to see a vintage pen go up in smoke in my own hands too.
However, we're all only human, and through our lifetimes we live and learn. Sometimes the lessons can feel harsh.

Can a new section be made for the pen?

Yes, a replacement section similar to this one had already been made and installed with feed and nib in the pen. All that remained was to remove a fantastic EF flex nib and feed from what's in the photo for fitment into yet another Balance.

Hopefully the nib and feed weren't damaged and could still be removed after the section had gone up in smoke.

No, the incident with the threads had no impact on the section, feed or nib. The nib is now in an ebonite pearl Balance. The section and feed are in a parts drawer, still useful for repair of another oversize Sheaffer Balance or flattop with irreparable threads, though new threads would have to be turned and pressed into place over the cleaned-up brass. Hopefully I will never have to do so, but this customised section will be available...just in case.

Those threads weren't turned by a repairperson; they were cut off a donor barrel and grafted onto your barrel.
